Welcome to the new 2019 Mitsubishi Triton Vs 2018 Mitsubishi Triton comparison. Mitsubishi have finally updated the Triton so it’s time to compare the old Triton (2018) with the new Mitsubishi Triton (2019). The Triton is one of our favourite Light commercial or ute/utility vehicles simply due to the value from money package. So when the new one was announced we where interested to reviewing the new model to find out how much is has changed to superseded one!

New Mitsubishi Triton Vs Mitsubishi Triton exterior: Mitsubishi is experienced in visually updating their cars and SUVs leaving the basics alone and making is visually ‘new’. And it works, the new 2019 Triton is a good looking ute or light commercial, truck what ever the this class of cars or SUVs are called these days. There are a lot of changes to the exterior and definitely worth calling it a new model but of course it is mostly a carry over underneath. The old Triton was not a ugly ute but not exactly good looking either and in certain model grades does look quite nice. However we definitely prefer the new design.

New Mitsubishi Triton Vs Mitsubishi Triton interior: The new Triton’s interior redesign effort is not as good as the exterior redesign. Sure it’s a update of the older design with a new centre stack but you can still recognise the carry over parts and the material quality hasn’t improved that much but soft inserts are placed well, the dash board is hard plastic but tries hard to look more upmarket and we think it looks a little older in terms of design. We have to note that rear air vents in the higher end models which is the first we’ve seen in the ute class. Regardless the commercial bias has not changed with the new Triton. The old Triton’s design is not too bad really and they should have just used better materials in the new one.

New Mitsubishi Triton Vs Mitsubishi Triton technology: The new Triton  doesn’t appear to have any standout changes to the hardware but you can assume that refinement has been made to keep up with it’s competitors. The 4WD drivetrain is still worth a mention as it is the most advanced system in the ute class with the ability to use rear wheel drive or AWD on the road and a low range gearbox for proper off road capability and 4WD abilities. The update also sees the introduction of a 6 speed automatic gearbox and digital radio. All the other newer utes have cut short their off road capability by having only a extra low gear rather than a separate box and is a bit off a rip off with separate gear reduction. Pity Mitsubishi’s marketing department haven’t seen fit to point this out.

New Mitsubishi Triton Vs Mitsubishi Triton drive: The old Triton was a descent enough drive. Firm sports car like suspension but leant in the corners, reasonably refined in terms of noice but you can still tell it’s a diesel. If the new Triton is queter and a fraction softer would help broaden it’s appeal.

The new Triton is definitely a good visual update on the old model with some mechanical upgrades and arguably refinement thrown in. The new one wins this comparison even when you take price into account. Yes the new Triton has had price increases but arguably the most popular model will be the GLS MR model grade with the dark alloy wheels and 7 air bags and auto emergency brakes price at RRP $46,990 which is lower than the prior 2018 top range version. This is equilivent in spec to the top range utes aka Hilux or Navara in terms of equipment and $5000 less! Forget the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok as they are overpriced and under spec. Expect aggressive pricing from the dealers to compete with the other brands, don’t be too concerned ask as it’s competitors are also built in Thailand with no additional taxes.

We think the Triton has all the specification, safety and 4WD load carrying capacity regardless of whether you choose the old one or new one. The 2019 Triton range has a small price increase but you do get some updated tech and design so fair enough. Mitsubishi still carries over the engine which is a sensible decision but disappointing that they didn’t tweak to for more power, maybe the new gearbox is sufficient to give the engine new life. Only a test drive will reveal whether it does. Overall the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton with a new look improved tech especially in the $40,000 – $50000 bracket is definitely worth a look.
