Welcome to the final Mitsubishi Triton Vs Nissan Navara D22 comparison and review. These two are the oldest commercial/recreational utes out of the current batch of LCVs on sale in 2014 for which the Triton will be replaced within 12 months and the Navara D40 version replaced, admittedly no real news on the replacement for the D22 version featured here and sold a primarily as a commercial vehicle is over 15 years old. The Triton is youthful by comparison at about 10 years.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Nissan Navara exterior: The Mitsubishi Triton still looks great after all these years. Sure the initial version had a longer tray, that didn’t look quite right and subsequently fixed. The current Triton is essentially the only ‘good’ looking model in the range. The D22 was a decent looking ute when released but the current overly blinged version only appeals to certain people like accountants where cost is the primary factor. Both at long, thin and tall as per the design trend when they where initially released. Thankfully the quality of the exterior fittings are very good.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Nissan Navara interior: Generally ,the Triton’s interior is basic but a step up from the D22 Navara in terms of quality of materials and features. Both cars have bits from other models which is fair enough and don’t look too out of place. Seats are reasonable but look thin. Once again the top range Triton has bits and pieces added over time that the latest Ford Ranger/BT40 and even the under achieving but heavily promoted Amarok don’t have.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Nissan Navara technology: The final version of the Triton has some decent features not available in the other models, in particular it does have the most advanced AWD and 4WD system of any Ute. Yes it’s the only one with AWD on normal roads and selectable modes for off road work and even a standard diff lock! The Navara has none of these features and very basic 2WD on the road and 4WD off road only without any additional traction aids. Note the both use diesel engines and have the same issues. Their long life span means that they’ve had many engine options over the years but both now only come with a single but reasonably modern diesel option.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Nissan Navara the drive: We have driven both over the years. So our impressions are as follows: both a old school Utes in drive which means harsh suspension no steering feel and very noisy compared to any newer ute you can imagine. The turbo lag was more noticeable in the Triton but there’s a fix for that apparently. That’s why the Hilux sold so well when the three models where head to head. Now that the Navara and Triton are in the run out phase the price difference make them worth seriously considering.
If looks and features and a advanced off road 4WD system are an issue the Triton impresses so pick that one. If cost and wants dictate a basic ute then the Navara is the one to choose.
