This is the new Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-5 comparison for 2023. The Corolla Cross compared to its rivals reveals that it is a competitive model. However it is definitely not a clean sweep if you check out our other comparisons. The current generation Mazda CX-5 has been a one of our favourite choices despite being on sale for over 4 years. Since the price of both clearly cross over, how does the CX-5 compare to the Corolla Cross?
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-5 exterior design: The CX-5 is a good looking SUV in comparison to the conservative and quite plain Corolla Cross. BTW – The size difference is minimal which further validates the comparison. Ultimately which one you prefer is personal but we can see the benefits of having such a low key design language in terms of the Corolla Cross. Mind you you could do the same with the CX-5 – just order the white one.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-5 interior: The interior of the Corolla Cross is nice but quite normal and it is very Toyota like and identical to the Corolla. So while it has good quality materials and design is a little dated. In comparison the CX-5 has a more upmarket ambience and arguably better materials. We didn’t think it was futuristic like many newer designs but best described as a Japanese luxury especially in the top of the range models.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-5 engines and technology: Toyota is all about hybrid engines and safety tech so the Corolla Cross does not disappoint. Their Hybrids are the best choices but at a price. Mazda’s are not known for their hybrids in that there aren’t any – unless you get the JDM Mazda3 Hybrid of course which in turn has the tech from the Corolla Hybrid. Rather, Mazda’s offer the most advanced non-turbo engines in the world and when a turbo charger is added is even better. So fuel efficiency suffers but honestly not far off the Toyota Hybrids.
The conclusion and winner of the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-5 comparison is probably a draw. The drive experience and looks are the CX-5 best characteristics and if you chose the turbo version lots of performace. You see when the CX-5 petrol engine is kept in the power zone it is one of the funniest SUVs you can buy even those costing twice the price. Pity all of them are automatics and all tuned for fuel economy. The Corolla Cross looks so ordinary that any spark of fun would be regarded as a surprise – great marketing for even the self proclaimed or experienced ‘influencers’ fall for this sort of thing. Anyway both are great choices.
