This is the Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 comparison for 2018. The Volvo has really set a new standard in terms of specification and look and feel with only one flaw. The BMW X1 on the other hand is new to us although been on sale for near 10 years although the current version since 2016. It’s price was too high for the specification list amongst other things that prevented us from even considering for a comparison. However we checked one out a few weeks ago and here are our opinions compared against the Volvo XC40.
Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 Class exterior comparison: The Volvo is clearly the better looking SUV, it’s modern, European inspired and you can believe it as a design that Volvo would make. While it does have similarities overall it is different to look at than other SUVs in the class. The BMW X1 on the other hand is not elegant or prestige looking and it is still deliberately awkward to look at it is arguably ‘cheap’ to look at. This visually reminds us of South Korean cars in the 90’s. Regardless it does look like a BMW and that’s brand heritage or image for you street cred but with what appears to be lower quality than the other BMW models.
Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 interior comparison: The XC40 interior in a good place to be in and for most the model range and feels like a more expensive place than the price indicates. It comes standard with big video screens, design and the use of materials is really very good. Try it and you’ll like it. The XC40 also feels bigger than the X1 despite similar sizes. In comparison the BMW X1 interior is a cheaper place to be in and purposely designed to look and feel entry level. This interior is suitable for cars or SUV from 2000’s but not 2018. Add some options and it become better but still dated.
Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 engine and technology comparison: In terms of safety only the XC40 has the suite of modern safety systems the BMW is lacking even the the basic auto brakes and gadgets like motorised tail gate and GPS navigation software as standard. In terms of engines the X1 has a good set of options but once again using turbo tuning trick for rip off pricing. You need to hit the BMW X1 options list to match even the base level XC40 which makes it a very expensive.
Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 drive report : N/A
The conclusion and winner of the Volvo XC40 Vs BMW X1 comparison is the XC40. The XC40 has the engines, equipment, build quality and gadgets to satisfy those wanting a modern SUV and at a price that is high but not unaffordable. The BMW X1 is no competition to the XC40, perhaps except in terms of brand image or Street cred. However in our eyes the XC40 is more than a match for the X1 in terms of prestige.
