This comparison is justified by the impression of luxury, specifically the top range CX-5. If you’ve ever been inside the current generation of the CX-5 especially the top range variant, you’ll know that it has luxury aspirations. On the other hand the Lexus NX is an increasing well known luxury model gaining popularity but relatively late in it’s model cycle. Likewise if you’ve ever been inside any NX you’ll understand why it has always been considered a luxury model.

Mazda CX-5 vs Lexus NX exterior design: The CX-5 is a good looking modern interpretation of an SUV and it doesn’t look ‘cheap’. Does the CX-5 look like a luxury SUV? In many ways yes. For example, the paint quality and selection is very nice but the rear end lights don’t give any upmarket pretension. The Lexus NX is based on the superseded Toyota RAV4 but clearly you wouldn’t associate the two models. The NX has a luxury look, even ignoring the badge.

Mazda CX-5 vs Lexus NX interior: The CX-5 interior is a nice and modern place to be in (top model grade) filled with soft touch plastic or leather and high quality hard plastics. With color option for the leather trim in cream has the most luxury ambience. The NX is a very nice place to be in and it does have the edge on the Mazda in materials. The design language is shared amongst other Lexus so it does look familiar and best described as sports luxury. However it is looking a little old and an initially confusing design to look at.

Mazda CX-5 vs Lexus NX engines and technology: The Lexus NX has 2 main engine options, a powerful 2 litre turbo and the Hybrid. The suite of safety systems is dependent on model grade. Likewise the Mazda has the equivalent systems and double the engine options including a diesel and powerful turbo petrol but missing a Hybrid option. Although nice to have a powerful engine any SUV with a decent performing genuine hybrid engine is going to win a comparison as it is the future at least until battery technology catches up.

Mazda CX-5 Vs Lexus NX street cred comparison: Although a Lexus badge doesn’t have the prestige as some European manufacturers as a new car but as a used car the Lexus brand has much more cred and demand compared to a 2nd hand European car brand. In comparison, the Mazda doesn’t have the same sort of cred.

The conclusion and winner of the Mazda CX-5 vs Lexus NX comparison is probably a draw. The CX-5 is a great package as it looks and feels like a luxury model (top model grade only) unfortunately the Lexus NX has something that makes it looks and feel more upmarket. The Lexus may be ultimately more expensive than the Mazda however as per their price points, a purchaser would logically only compare the top range CX-5 or an entry level NX. At the price point the Lexus Hybrid engine in the NX – the flavor of the decade will outweigh the good of the CX-5. We think it would be tough decision.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
