This is the first van comparison we’ve done to date due to the rare release of an all new Hiace model. We’ll probably do some more as this is a growing segment in light of current events.

2004-2019 Toyota Hiace Vs new Toyota Hiace exterior comparison: The old Hiace was a ubiquitous commercial van that was designed to maximise carrying space. As a result it’s basically a rectangular box on wheels just like any van that predates it. Boxes with straight edges don’t really go out of fashion so it still looks decent. The new Hiace follows the box design but has the more 2000’s van shape with the engine sticking out. As a result it’s not as space efficient hence it’s longer and wider just any other modern van in 2020. That said it is a more commercial design than other in it’s class but being more box like in angles.

2004-2019 Toyota Hiace Vs new Toyota Hiace interior comparison: The interior of vans meant for commercial use are quite basic in design with hard plastics all round and that’s true for both. However the new Hiace design is clearly better and nicer to be in thanks to the engine in front of the driver rather than under the front seats. In fact the new Hiace interior is palatial and comfortable compared to the cramped older model. Since there is also family focused variant, the replacement for the Tarago called the Granvia which you strip that out for more comfortable parts if you really wanted to.

2004-2019 Toyota Hiace Vs new Toyota Hiace engines and technology comparison: The old Hiace had many different engines over 16 year life span. The last model had the engines from the Hilux but detuned so are reliable units. The new Hiace follows the same path sharing engines with a the same 2.8 Diesel engine but also a 3.5 litre petrol V6 to add some performance to the class. Admittedly the Hiace now weighs over 2 tones which blunts performance some what. There are also more safety system and tech features like internal ladder racks and a camera based rear view mirror.

2004-2019 Toyota Hiace Vs new Toyota Hiace carrying capacity: As with all commercial vans there are different variants Needless to say the older Hiace has smaller physical dimensions. Of note the older van has a longer load length due to the 1 box body but is it generally smaller overall. However new Hiace is clearly the bigger van in both physical and carrying capacity. We found it interesting the the old SLWB Hiace is quite close to the new one in terms of dimensions.

The conclusion and winner of the 2004-2019 Toyota Hiace Vs new 2020 Toyota Hiace comparison is the new Hiace. No contest really, the new model is a huge leap in every measurable way compared to the old model. Sure there is a price jump but it is inline with the competition and there are clear upgrades. In fact it’s design is clearly and carefully though out.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
