One of the most popular models in the ute class aka light truck class is the Toyota Hilux and if the D-Max is to succeed it has to the offer a value proposition against it. With so many competitors including the refresh 2021 Hilux upgrades, has Isuzu down enough with the new D-Max to compete.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Toyota Hilux exterior comparison: The design trend for most manufacturers over the last few years has been to incorporate an overly large grill, often described in the popular press as the ‘aggressive’ front end. Unfortunately it is paired with a derivative hence conservative side and evolutionary rear end. B0th these utes have them but the Hilux has the bolder version based on other Toyota models. Isuzu never really had a corporate design philosophy on it’s version of a ute so this design is a good as any. As a result the Hilux still looks like a Hilux and the D-Max just like the immediately prior model and the front end looks better in real life than the pictures.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Toyota Hilux interior comparison: The D-Max has a completely new interior that is more contemporary but overall it’s a conservative design. The Hilux interior is a ‘Hilux interior’ and you can’t confuse it with any other manufacturer. They should be applauded for creating such a unique interior that is immediately recognisable. Yes, the the dash top may be hard plastic but it doesn’t look it, at least in the showroom. The D-Max has the larger interior if that is what you are after and it’s an OK place excluding the cheap looking plastic screen. The materials are fairly similar but the Hilux has better build quality.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Toyota Hilux engine and technology comparison: The 2021 Hilux has a turbo tuned engine range which is the biggest problem for us. That said the difference is between the manual vs automatic versions which is a common practice but we don’t like. Take note Hilux buyers, the smaller 2.4 turbo diesel variant is pretty decent although down on power. The D-Max has a claimed new engine which has pretty good specs. Apart from that there is nothing really special in either models. Similar safety features are up to date and dependent on model grade.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Toyota Hilux drive comparison: N/A

The winner of the Isuzu D-Max Vs Toyota Hilux comparison is the Hilux by a hair due to pricing. The D-Max has the most noticeable upgrades despite looking very similar to the last model. The overall D-Max package is pretty good but only in the mid range spec whereas the Hilux only adds a bunch of accessories to the best selling SR5, now midrange model grade. The JBL speaker system on the top range Hilux is something the other Utes don’t have and will always get bonus points. If Isuzu can overcome it’s ‘cheaper’ associated brand baggage this D-Max should be good buy.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
