The Ford Ranger is one of the best sellers in the ute or light truck class and the only model keeping the brand in Australia. Isuzu does well in the larger commercial truck business hence not endanger of collapse and the D-Max is a great additional to their brand. So how does the former afterthought for Ford company compare to the another seemingly lower priority model from Isuzu?

Isuzu D-Max Vs Ford Ranger exterior comparison: Both are decent looking but conservative designs except for the front end treatment. In that regard the Ranger is arguably the most ordinary design. The Ranger has been around for nearly 10 years and like the others, have not managed to release any inspired design trends. That said it still looks modern enough. In fact each year has only seen more changes to the front end rather than technical improvements. If you think about it it’s little sad. In comparison, even the D-Max being and all new model hasn’t progressed the design of the class.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Ford Ranger interior comparison: The Ford interior is a nice place to be and has incremental updates as you pay more. The largest semi digital dashboard is arguably a selling point for most buyers despite knowing that the stereo system is a little ordinary and not replaceable. The design is very conservative aka a little dated with the small centre screen but the materials are some of the nicest in the class in 2020 but not matching other normal cars in the same price bracket. In comparison the new D-Max interior is a huge upgrade from the last model in design and materials and is a good place to be in as well but not quite as consistently nice as the Ranger.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Ford Ranger engine and technology comparison: One of the key selling points of the Ranger is the 500Nm of torque from the engine and the availability of the off road focused Ranger Raptor variant. It’s reliability and problems are well documented so you know what you are getting into. It is also missing the latest safety systems you’d expect for the price. The D-Max has a class competitive engine but it’s safety systems are top of the class. Sure not all of them are essential but the ute class are not the best handlers or stoppers so any additional safety systems is a selling point.

Isuzu D-Max Vs Ford Ranger drive comparison: N/A

The winner of the Isuzu D-Max Vs Ford Ranger comparison is the D-Max. We think it’s all about the price and branding. The D-Max is priced lower than the Ranger but it is class average prices yet offers more features than the Ranger. The Ranger is larger which is the one of key selling points but we don’t think the $4000-5000 price difference is worth it for a few centimetres. Likewise the Ranger’s best engine has a $8000-10000 premium which is a little too much. That said the Ford Ranger brand is much stronger than the D-Max.

Ford Ranger

Isuzu D-Max (2021)

Engines

IL5 Cylinder Diesel
3.2 Litre (3198cc) Diesel
Single Turbo DOHC EFI DI CR
Claimed 147Kw @ 3000 RPM
Claimed 470Nm @ 1750 RPM

IL4 Cylinder Diesel
3 Litre (2999cc)
Turbo DOHC EFI DI CR
Claimed 140Kw @ 3600RPM
Claimed 450Nm @ 1600-2600RPM

IL4 Cylinder Diesel
Twin Turbo DI CR
2.0 Litre (1996cc) Diesel
Claimed 157Kw @ 3750 RPM
Claimed 500Nm @ 1750 RPM

2.2 Litre (2198cc) Diesel
Turbo DOHC EFI DI CR
Claimed 118Kw @ 3200 RPM
Claimed 385Nm @ 1600 RPM

Weight

FROM Approx 2000Kg
Towing capacity up to 3500kg

FROM 2000Kg
Towing capacity up to 3500kg

Fuel capacity &
