We are surprised by the longevity of the current HR-V model. According JATO the HR-V CR-V or Vezel sold over 221,000 around the world last year and the Ford Puma doesn’t. Although we like both so far, is the newly released Ford Puma worth buying over the HR-V?

Ford Puma vs Honda HR-V exterior: The Puma is a good looking design that grows on you as it is initially challenging. It has the traits of Jaguar (which Ford used to own) and some Porsche as well. The Puma is a modern design that shouldn’t date too quickly. This version of the HR-V is a decent looking and conservative design by 2021 standards and it is looking a little old.

Ford Puma vs Honda HR-V interior: The Ford Puma interior is not a special place to be in. The design and materials are up to 2021 standards and clearly made to look and feel – normal or contemporary. The highlight of the Puma’s interior is the digital instruments that draw the eyes so you ignore the rest. It’s a decent interior for passengers and day to day luggage just not special. The Honda HR-V is a decent design too that reflects it’s age and it stands up to the more modern Puma, after the Ford only has the digital dash and conservative design elsewhere. The HR-V also has magic seats which makes the interior more flexible.

Ford Puma vs Honda HR-V engine and technology: The HR-V engine and tech are modern but not the latest. Standard safety systems are sub-par for the most affordable HR-V models which is disappointing but there is a price difference. The HR-V has a CVT but it’s OK while the Puma has a Ford DSG hence a tie in this department. The Puma has the latest 3 cylinder turbo with more safety and tech for not much more for the price difference. Engine power is similar but the Puma has more torque at lower revs for a less frantic drive than say Honda engine of this vintage but are still very smooth, fuss free and enjoy a good rev.

Ford Puma vs Honda HR-V road test: N/A

The winner of the Ford Puma vs Honda HR-V comparison is the Puma by a hair. The HR-V interior is the better place to be in than the Ford Puma. The mainly analogue dials, touch buttons and what we describe at retro design elements does appeal, even the hard plastics add character. The CVT or DSG is the compromise that depends on which one you are willing to put up with and known reliability vs known unrealiability. The Puma with it’s digital display, but only on the mid range models up is the only highlight otherwise average interior for a new model and it’s safety systems which has auto emergency brakes across the range is the only reason why it wins this comparison.

Honda HR-V

Ford Puma

Engines

4 Cylinder Petrol 91 Octane
1.8 Litre (1799cc)
DOHC VTEC EFI
Claimed 105Kw @ 6500 RPM
Claimed 172Nm @ 4300 RPM

3 Cylinder petrol (95 Octane)
1.0 Litre (999cc)
Turbo DOHC VVT DI EFI
Claimed 92Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 170Nm @ 1500RPM

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1319 Kg
Towing capacity up to 800kg

Kerb weight 1291 Kg
Towing capacity up to 750kg

Fuel capacity &
