Historically the Outlander has been one of the less popular models and for a number of very good reasons. Now that the company’s been integrated in the French led Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi ‘Alliance’ the new Outlander is a shared platform between the 3 brands. As always with a new released model we compare the outgoing model vs the new model. We had the chance to finally check on out in showroom.

2022 Mitsubishi Outback Vs 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander exterior comparison: The out going Outlander was different to it’s competitors by being a design that goes beyond the usual conservative description. The face lift 4 years ago did lift it’s appearance and a decent update which Mitsubishi designers should be very happy with. However it couldn’t hide it’s already aged over 10 year old stretched ASX platform. In comparison the new Outlander is still a conservative design and a mix of current Ranger Rover and VW Tiguan styling thus the overall impression is box like.

2022 Mitsubishi Outback Vs 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander interior comparison: The old Outlander interior was a OK place to be in but over the years it was distinctly aged. The new Outlander design is a much different place to be in, it’s contemporary and a open and light filled. Yet the ‘thicker’ design looks more solid though in the Japanese lightness of touch principle which most people interpret incorrectly. The materials are not luxury level by 2022 standards but it as good as any in the price class it competes. Unfortunately we thought some parts where a little rattily.

2022 Mitsubishi Outback Vs 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander engines and technology: The new Outlander uses updated tech seemingly shared with the old version but it is more a carry over Nissan engine from the X-Trail and other tech. Unfortunately it looks like they have also taken the less than reliable CVT transmission, mind you they may have finally fixed it.

In conclusion and winner to the 2022 Mitsubishi Outback Vs 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander comparison is the new Outlander. While we were not entirely impressed with the new Outlander it’s a much better model than the older model in all but projected reliability. Sure prices have gone up but it’s still competitive with other brands.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

2021 Mitsubishi Outlander

Engines

IL Petrol (91 Octane)
DOHC Engine EFI
2.4 Litre (2488cc)
Claimed 135Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 245Nm @ 3600RPM

4B11 + PHEV
IL4 Petrol + Electric motors
2.0 Litre (1995cc) Unleaded
Claimed 87Kw @ 4500RPM
Claimed 186Nm @ 4500RPM
Electric motors x2 120Kw &
