With the refreshed Ford Ranger just released in late 2022 it has taken awhile for us to actually be able to review one in the showroom. In case you haven’t noticed it’s not easy to get a new car due to global shortages. Regardless they are arch rivals and worth a comparison. Indeed both where given their accolades when released as promoted by the various for profit publications – which is perfectly fine if you remember they are just opinions.

Toyota Hilux vs For Ranger exterior comparison: With relative success of the Ranger model in some countries, the Ford breakup with Mazda the next Ford Ranger was always going to be an interesting release. As it turns out Ford and VW teamed up for the new model and the result is indeed interesting. The front and rear ends have been ‘updated’ but the end result are side profiles are too Japanese and the front end more North American F Series. It looks fresh but the only reason you’d pick it up as a new model is the inevitable larger body. In comparison credit must be given to Toyota for trying something different to all other light commercial brand and that is to make a design that is an evolution of the prior model and a design that makes it distinct design language. The 2022 update makes the design more conservative compared to the original release which the top range Rouge variants look a little cheap and poor done aftermarket mods. The 2023 models are arguably good looking. We like the sportier size and design of the updated Hilux and prefer it to the less proportional Ranger but there’s very little in it and anything could sway our opinion.

Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger interior comparison: The Ford interior is a nice upgrade from the prior model and now more in line with the F series trucks but on a smaller scale of course. Ranger interior trims do get better the more you pay but the basics are pretty good for a commercial vehicle. Entry level Rangers for the fleets are basic and the top rangers are car like. The standard digital instrument and centre screen are nice touches that lift he ambience especially in the base models.

In comparison Toyota should again be credited for trying a design that is retro modern and that you could easily identify as a Hilux. There is a noticeable difference in size as the Hilux interior is more compact as it always was. Oversized bodies will fit but they won’t be as comfortable as in the Ranger. The Hilux also reveals that Toyota never planned for a more upmarket interior or sound system for the Hilux so even adding the JBL speaker system looks aftermarket and certainly much better rather than standard. Nonetheless the Hilux has higher quality plastics, fit, finish and just feels more solid.

Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger engine and technology comparison: There are many changes made to the Ranger. It has updated diesel engines and turbos (from the Rover group) and V6 for the Raptor. 4×4 models now have 4WD or AWD and a 10 speed auto but the Ford Ranger does not have a low range transfer case or gear box just extra low gears as part of the 10 speed ratios. Expectedly no reviews mention the lack of this feature although it seems the single gearbox durable enough. The Ranger however does get a rear diff lock in 4×4 models. So remember which 4WD system you get as it is dependent on model grade. The stereo system and air con system are now all controlled via the large screen which we guess will be scratched up in the minutes after delivery and digital instruments as standard. In comparison the Hilux hasn’t changed much bar fine tuning of the existing hardware – which is expected so its a better model from the last.

Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger street cred comparison: The Ranger has a following of loyal owners convinced of Ford’s truck manufacturing prowess in the US market with the F Series. However the Ranger is Japanese but now with VW and Land Rover parts. It is unlikely to surpass the Hilux’s reputation for durability built over decades.

The winner of the Ford Ranger Vs Toyota Hilux comparison is a draw. The new Ford Ranger has quite a few updates arguably worth the extra price however it still remains a commercial vehicle at its core. However issue and what it entails is that it heavier than over by about 200kg, so you are carrying an extra to people wherever you go no faster or economical or carry any more. So you left with a revised front end nicer stereo system and digital instruments. In comparison the Hilux only scored a updated engine and trim variations since release 8 years ago so it is an update behind the latest Ford Ranger. The Hilux now has more costly top range variants that include branded 2nd and 3rd part components. However and ultimately the main issue is that is does not have anymore powerful or efficient engines. Hence we think they are pretty much equal.

<td style="text-align: left; width: 346px;
