These two models are another example of manufacturers sharing the same basic design but adding their own design themes and equipment packs.

The 4008 is clearly the more upmarket version in many markets including Australia with more shiny parts on the outside and seeming expensive panels on the interior. The ASX is typically Japanese and essentially nice but not outstanding. The exterior design on the 4008 is also better proportioned compared to the fussy ASX. We’d buy the 4008 on these factors.

In terms of engine none of the engines are particularly powerful or stand out in the rest of competition. The 4008 is only available in petrol for the time being which is disappointing. That said all the small and compact SUVs being released are being sold including our current favorite the XV only have 2 litre engines of similar power outputs. It seems the majority of the market prefer low fuel use than high power – which is fair enough.

The 4008 is a very competitive package with Japanese reliability and standout European badge due to relatively low sales numbers. We prefer to pay a little extra for more equipment and shiny bits but also for the lower servicing requirements, one annual service and fixed pricing for the first 3 years.

Peugeot 4008

Mitsubishi ASX

Engines

4 Cylinder (4B11)
2.0 Litre (1998cc) petrol (95 Octane)
DOHC VVT EFI
Claimed 110Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 197Nm @ 4200RPM

4 Cylinder (4N13)
1.8 Litre (1798cc) diesel
Turbo intercooled
Common rail direct injection
Claimed 110Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 300Nm @ 2000RPM

4 Cylinder (4B11)
2.0 Litre (1998cc) petrol (91 Octane)
DOHC VVT EFI
Claimed 110Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 197Nm @ 4200RPM

4 Cylinder (4N13)
1.8 Litre (1798cc) diesel
Turbo intercooled
Common rail direct injection
Claimed 110Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 300Nm @ 2000RPM

Weight

Kerb weight 1340 –
