The current FJ Cruiser has been around for a very long time (2006) in car years and it still sells and hasn’t dated in appearance since release. The FJ is unique design on the outside and basic interior and reasonable price has made it stand the test of time hence demand. In fact it is the only Toyota that is vaguely adventurous in design. It is in essence a larger version of the new Nissan Juke but for off road driving.

Officially released here in late 2010 it was and still is based on the 120 series platform just like a number of other Toyotas eg. the Hilux. The engineering is good and the mechanicals like the V6 petrol engine are great too. (Updated to 200Kw for the Australian release) We have read very few legitimate complaints about the FJ. The only issue with the FJ Cruiser is packaging. Sure it says 4 doors and it is but anyone will find it challenging to get in through the 2 very small doors. It is quite difficult to climb into even if equipped with side steps. The basic quality of the interior and dashboard design is also disappointing but it is exactly what Toyota designed it for, rubber floors etc…!

In comparison to the FJ the 150 series looks modern on the outside although it has lost the more upmarket feel (for its time in production) of the 120 series. Sure the 150 series’ interior is nice but not as nice as it could and should have been especially for the increased price. Regardless it is a much nicer place to be than the FJ Cruiser.

Both are very different cars although based on the the same or similar design. It is very difficult to cross shop unless you are after the cheapest car with the same engine and mechanicals but if that was the case then the Hilux is probably something you should consider too. So for the majority city based buyers the key selling point is its cool exterior design rather than how useful it is or how much it carries.

Note that its direct competitor is the Jeep Wrangler but we’d choose the FJ Cruiser every time due to very much better on road refinement and reliability.

//
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
