The just released Subaru XV is one of the best compact SUV models released by the company in recent years where as the Mini Countryman is yet another variation from the basic MINI platorm and marketed as a fashion/retro brand.

We’ll get the bad bits out of the way first: The Subaru XV is great for a Subaru except for the extra light doors and very average engine performance. Furthermore while it looks modern in side and out it is conservative overall especially in plain colours. The XV is a little expensive for the class and suffers from owner stereotyping and service costs.

The MINI is more about looks more than anything else. The design is retro but in some parts the quality of materials a build quality is not up to the price tag. Visit any used car lot and see what we mean. The MINI Countryman’s interior likewise looks great, retro and modern at the same time but once again look more closely the quality of materials, fit and finish and flexing or lose interior fittings are not up to the Subaru XV or even price tag. The multiple engine options is puzzling all are underpowered compared the competition but thanks to the lighter kerb weight helps performance balance out.

The best parts about the Subaru XV is that it is a neat and up to date small SUV package that is as good a any others currently available in 2012. The MINI Countryman is a stylish small SUV to some people but to most it is overpriced and very basic even before you add any options.

Subaru XV

Mini Countryman

Engines

FB20 series engine
F4 Petrol
DOHC Boxer Engine EFI VVT
2.0 Litre (1995cc)
Claimed 110Kw @ 6200RPM
Claimed 196Nm @ 4100RPM

IL4 Cylinder (N16B16A)
DOHC VVT EFI Petrol (95 Octane)
1.6 Litre (1598cc)
Claimed 90Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 160Nm @ 4250RPM

IL4 Cylinder (N47C16A)
DI Turbo Diesel
1.6 Litre (1598cc)
Claimed 82Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 270Nm @ 1750RPM

IL4 Cylinder Turbo (N18B6A)
DOHC Turbo Inter-cooled (95 Octane)
1.6 Litre (1598cc)
Claimed 134Kw @ 5500RPM
Claimed 240Nm @ 1600RPM

IL4 Cylinder Turbo (N47C20A)
DI Turbo Diesel
2.0 Litre (1995cc)
Claimed 105Kw @ 5000RPM
Claimed 305Nm @ 1750RPM

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1390Kg
Towing capacity up to 1400kg

Kerb weight FROM 1295Kg
Towing capacity up to xxxxkg

Fuel capacity &
