At the time of this comparison in (October 2012) the CX-5 has been around for 6 months in the country and one of the best selling SUVs as expected of a brand new model. The CX-5 corrects the fuel consumption problems from the last model and is technically one of the most advanced cars you can get. However there is currently a problem with the new diesel engine that they are in the progress of fixing. The Dualis has been sold for a number of years but has been updated for 2012 with equipment updates.

The Nissan Dualis has been around since 2007 and has been a surprisingly successful model for the company. The introduction of the series 2 update in 2010 then Series 3 update this year has only improved its standing with a better looking front end and updated interior. It still does not match the CX-5 in terms of trim quality but its not far off given it is a much older design. The Dualis looks good at all angles except for the rear and we do prefer it to the slightly awkward and seen it before CX-5 design.

The CX-5 and Dualis are now comparable since there is a 7 seater and stretched option for the Dualis. In general though the Dualis is more comparable with the Subaru Imprezza or the VW Tiguan due to size rather than the ‘larger’ small SUVs like the CX-5 and C-RV. The Dualis has the smaller engine so won’t be as fast but then there is enough performance for regular driving. Note that the CX-5 and Dualis 2.0 litre petrol engines are underpowered if carrying more than one passenger – they are not sports cars.

Although the technical and claimed fuel consumption for the CX-5 is very low – in real life it would be hard to achieve. So we believe that the key things that will sway buyers though will be the price and equipment levels people rarely pay for potential in this market segment and they are highly researched as well. For example, the top range Ti and TI-L can be purchased from $29,990 with tons of useful equipment like 4 parking cameras, full leather and a panoramic sunroof amongst other luxury items. It’s pricing makes the CX-5 and the Imprezza in particular seem over priced!

Sure the Dualis doesn’t have the interior flexibility or more expensive looking materials like the CX-5 but the price difference really makes up for any short falls. Since the Dualis can use 91 Octane extra fuel and is compensated for by cheaper purchase and fuel price makes it a compelling small a and SUV to consider. We think the Nissan Dualis is a really good car and option if you want a fully loaded SUV without the price tag of the CX-5.

Mazda CX-5 (KE Series)

Nissan Dualis (J10)

Engines

SKYACTIV-G
IL4 cylinder Petrol
DOHC with VVTi Direct Injection EFI
2.0 Litre (1977cc)
Claimed 114kW @ 6000 RPM
Claimed 200Nm @ 4000 RPM

SKYACTIV-D
IL4 cylinder Diesel
2.2 Litre (2191cc)
Turbo-charged –
