The one is the newest small SUV compared to one of the oldest models currently available. We’ve always liked what the Grand Vitara package was about – it is the onlysmall SUV that is genuinely capable off road and one of the small SUVs that you would actually take. We also liked the CR-V and consider it the bench mark small SUV.

The latest SUVs are better designed than their predecessors and the new CRV is a perfect example. It’s a fraction smaller than last model yet has more space and appears to look and feel bigger. Added to that there’s more power and theoretically uses less petrol and more convenient technology for everyday duties. The CRV is a very appealing small SUV in terms of presentation and certainly equals or betters other competitors aside from the Grand Vitara.

Despite it’s age the Grand Vitara still looks quite modern on the inside and out. However compared with the CRV the Grand Vitara is definitely looking it’s age by the choice of materials and lighting effects. The Grand Vitara as a small SUV but still feels solid and ultimately a great choice. However one of reasons why we didn’t buy one was that the mechanicals and engines need to be updated. There’s power there in the useful end of the rev range but it’s reluctant to deliver that power ‘zing’ we all expect towards the red line.

If you go off road regularly and can’t stretch to the larger SUVs or even the latest Subaru XV or Nissan X-Trail albeit they are not as sturdy then the value for money Grand Vitara is a great choice and that’s is unique selling point. It does work very well around town too but the newer models are better. So bargain hard for new Grand Vitara and you’ll be satisfied.

As a note for 2012 – Suzuki cars may have left the US market under a financial cloud (its not the first or last – watch out Mitsubishi) We have a simple advice for Suzuki – get a better dealer and servicing network not re-train – replace them and put more equipment in the cars.

Suzuki Grand Vitara

Honda CR-V

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft" style="border-style: initial;
