The 200 series LandCruiser is the biggest model you can get from Toyota. It is now marketed as a ‘luxury’ model as opposed to catering for a wider range of customers which is now the task of the 150 series Prado has taken over.

The 200 series is a huge car inside and out. The equipment levels are good but in this price range should be much better. For example a VX Prado is better equipped than the GXL 200 series LandCruiser. That said the VX Prado honestly does not have enough additional features above the GXL to justify the price difference either.

When buying the Prado or the 200 series LandCruiser you have to remember that these are not sports cars or vaguely sporty apart from their considerable engine power. Regardless of the equipment level complaints what you do get is a powerful, quiet and very refined car that is able to take you almost anywhere you want to go!

Both have relatively light steering wheels as per their Lexus equivalents. In the 200 series the steering gives the perception of less control around town since you know its a big on the road. It caused by the the speed sensitive steering apparently.
Since I wasn’t driving I can only say that as a passenger the 200 series regardless of engine has so much more usable torque that cruising feels more effortless than the Prado it also helps that the 200 seems quieter. It does mean its any faster than each other because they’re not. They literally effortless land cruisers!

Both are very similar cars overall, the main difference being size. Since the Prado is big enough for most of us, buying the 200 series would only be considered if size is required. Both are also really nice cars and we’d be happy with either however circumstances have changed (2010) and we are looking at smaller models at this stage hence the new section on the website.

Like its predecessors the LandCruiser is not a sports car but a commuter, one that will take your anywhere you’d want to go! We definitely like what is offers and the only thing preventing us from replacing the Prado with one is high cost and that it does not fit in the garage with the wing mirrors open.

2012 update: The 200 series LandCruiser was updated in early 2012 with equipment and a new base model the GX. TheV8 petrol engine has also been replaced. Unfortunately the price has risen – noticeably.

150 series LandCruiser Prado

200 Series LandCruiser

Engines

1GR-FE –
