We believe that the only other country to get this car is Thailand. This is a pity because it is really quite good. Sure the early models had issues but so do all manufacturers however they persisted and the current version is very good. The (2013 update) Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is possibly our favorite medium sized SUV has just been updated with a revised interior and exterior styling and even more features for your purchasing dollar.

First off we start with the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s main problem, which is patchy reliability, build quality and service support. We genuinely like the Jeep as our drive confirms and that it will convince many to buy although, judging by owner reviews and even long term magazine reviews its a 50/50 change of getting a good one as a bad one. The Ford Territory likewise had quality and reliability issue when first released but over the years they have been addressed and the current and possibly last of the series is one of the most reliable models you can buy.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Vs Ford Territory exterior: Easy win to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, although conservative it looks great on the road and also well put together. The Ford Territory is also very made and we couldn’t spot any flaws on the outside. However while its exterior design makes it conform to Ford’s global design language it’s not a a perfect fit, looking awkward at various angles.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Vs Ford Territory interior: The interior design of the Grand Cherokee is another amazing step up for Jeep. The design and choice of materials is up market! The only problem with the Jeeps’s interior is the way some parts fit together. Basically some parts where peeling off and some trim did not line up very well. The Grand Cherokee’s build quality needs to improve since everything else is high end. The Ford Territory’s interior is quite dated and feels a little cheap but it it is clearly functional and tidy.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Vs Ford Territory engine and technology: The Grand Cherokee comes with a decent V6 or V8 petrol or high powered diesel. We’d pick the diesel for the fuel saving despite higher purchase price since its quite a powerhouse – however for a diesel it is uneconomical and there is relatively little information about how robust its mechanicals will be for the long term. The Ford Territory has the proven diesel 4 and straight 6 cylinder that’s well known. The Jeeps interior technology surpasses the Ford and definitely more impressive to look at so the Jeep wins!

The conclusion to this comparison is clear – it an easy win to the updated Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee’s pricing, looks inside and out is better than the Ford. However the Ford is a evolutionary car and it is arguably the more reliable car to buy and probably the best in the price range. We have driven both and to be completely honest we prefer the Ford’s more secure drive but appreciate the Jeep’s power in a straight line but only as a V8 or diesel.

Ford Territory

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Engines

Barra 195
I6 cylinder Petrol
DOHC EFI
4 Litre (3984cc)
Claimed 195Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 391Nm @ 3250PMDURATORQ 27DT
V6 Turbo Diesel
DOHC DI Common-rail Turbo intercooler
2.7 Litre (2720cc)
Claimed 140Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 440Nm @ 1900RPM

G series Pentastar
V6 Petrol
DOHC VVT EFI
3.6 Litre (3604cc)
Claimed 210Kw @ 6350PM
Claimed 347Nm @ 4300PMHemi series
V8 Petrol
DOHC VVT EFI
5.7 Litre (5654cc)
Claimed 259Kw @ 5200PM
Claimed 520Nm @ 4300RPM

CRD RA Series
V6 Diesel
Direct Injection – Common Rail – Turbo
3 Litre (2987cc)
Claimed 184Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 570Nm @ 2000RPM

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1967Kg
Towing capacity up to 2300Kg

From 2191Kg
Towing capacity up to 3500kg (V6 diesel & V8 only)

Fuel capacity & consumption

75 litres
I6 Petrol 10.6 (A) litres per 100km (AWD)
V6 Turbo Diesel 8.2 litres per 100km

94 litres PULP/Diesel
V6 Petrol 10.4 litres per 100km
V8 Petrol 14.1 litres per 100km
V6 Diesel 7.5 litres per 100km

Other specifications

6 speed Auto
Overall height/width 1716/1898
Overall length/wheelbase 4883/2842
Drive system: AWD or 2WD (rear)
Tyre size: 235-60-17 235-55-18
NCAP safety rating 5/5

Angle of: (degrees)
Approach ??
