The flat front end in particular has a beaver look to it but the rest of the car is actually quite nice although not exactly sleek. The Santa Fe looks good when optioned with the appropriate sized tyres and has road presence. That said both base models are not pretty. We prefer the Santa Fe in the style comparison but only in this category. However it’a paint quality is notably cheaper looking than the Mazda.

Mazda CX-5 vs Hyundai Sana Fe interior: The CX-5 has one of the best quality and solid interior feel in the class. The only blemish is the not so integrated centre console for the stereo and GPS system. It does have an European look and feel to it but still touch of being Japanese which helps. The Santa Fe’s interior is quite nice too but it does feel ‘thinner’ hence dated however it is bigger than the CX-5. Only the top range Santa Fe feels like a good place to be.

Mazda CX-5 vs Hyundai Santa Fe engines and technology: The CX-5 wins, state of the art engine and safety tech. The Hyundai Santa Fe specification’s are old tech, even the only good engine the car has, namely the diesel uses too much diesel for the price. Sure the Mazda Diesel has had initial issues but that seems to be fixed now. The Santa Fe is clearly made using older techniques since it weighs over 300 kgs more for a car not much larger!

Mazda CX-5 vs Hyundai Santa Fe drive : N/A

The conclusion so far is: The only reasons for choosing the Hyundai is that it looks good and and slightly larger (but not large enough to justify the cost) than the CX-5. Apart from that the Santa Fe is off pace and way over priced. The CX-5 wins overall no matter which way to look at it.

Mazda CX-5

Hyundai Santa Fe

Mazda CX-5 interior

Hyundai Santa Fe

Engines

SKYACTIV-G
IL4 cylinder Petrol
DOHC with VVTi Direct Injection EFI
2.0 Litre (1977cc)
Claimed 114kW @ 6000rpm
Claimed 200Nm @ 4000rpmSKYACTIV-G 2
IL4 cylinder Petrol (91 Octane)
DOHC with VVTi Direct Injection EFI
2.5 Litre (2488cc)
Claimed 138kW @ 5700rpm
Claimed 250Nm @ 4000rpmSKYACTIV-D
IL4 cylinder Diesel
2.2 Litre (2191cc)
Turbo-charged –
