While we’re impressed with the new Qashqai we haven’t forgotten the Suzuki Grand Vitara one of our former favourites in the small SUV class. It’s newest vs the oldest small SUV comparison for sale – at the time of this review. Note that we don’t regard them as direct competitors because the focus of both cars is quite different.

Nissan Qashqai vs Suzuki Grand Vitara exterior: The Grand Vitara comes in short wheelbase 3 door and standard wheelbase 5 door models. The 3 door has the unique selling point of being the only door SUV available in the country at the moment. The 3 door Grand Vitara looks reasonably modern and since there is no competition the best looking 3 door SUV on sale in the country! Unfortunately while the 5 door Grand Vitara’s lines look clean it does look old compared to the Qashqai.

Nissan Qashqai vs Suzuki Grand Vitara interior: Once again the Qashqai is probably the best example to date of what a modern city focused SUV should be in the category. The Grand Vitara represents one of the best interiors of its era nearly 8 years ago and in 2014 it still looks OK enough and the build quality is one of the best on the market and just as comfortable but in a more up right fashion than the Nissan. As a further contrast the Grand Vitara’s build quality is easily better than the latest small SUV releases like the Holden Trax or Ford Ecosport.

Nissan Qashqai vs Suzuki Grand Vitara engine and technology: The Qashqai has all the latest tech features although engine and transmission need to be updated in a few years. In contrast the Grand Vitara is all about reliability and heavy duty chassis, the older engines to the dual range gearbox, the only one in the small SUV class! If your after a mini-Landcruiser than this is the 4WD to get. The Suzuki’s tech features need a serious upgrade but with the latest Navi pack addresses the most common requirements.

Nissan Qashqai vs Suzuki Grand Vitara drive: As we’ve said before the Grand Vitara rides and handles well for a traditional SUV meaning its different from the current models. In the 5 door model the engine is powerful enough but is hampered by its high torque tune at lower revs to be off road capably and on road drivable. The gearbox needs more on road gears and engine that essentially likes to rev as per its competitors. But for its age and is just as good as say the newest entry level SUV specifically the Trax, Captiva, Hyundai ix35 .

N/A yet for the Qashqai. The Grand Vitara from memory is a good combination of a off road capable 4WD and urban SUV. It drives like a mini-Prado in terms of driving feel and that’s a good thing in our opinion. The more car like SUV is good too but only on road which we expect the Qashqai to be like when we get around to driving it. The The 3 door Grand Vitara is the performance sleeper in our eyes and well worth a look if you can live with 3 doors.

The Qashqai wins if you want a on road focused SUV which has all the latest trimmings in a well priced package it is the class leader. If you want an genuine off road capable car than the Grand Vitara is the only choice. You can add many of the missing features to the Grand Vitara thanks to it older design but really its still a great package. Furthermore at least it still drives better than the Capitva and some other newer models. Finally you can get decent drive away deals on the Grand Vitara which keeps it in the the running with the latest release if to take the time to look.

//
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
