We looked at the Ford Ranger mid-life upgrade a few weeks ago and came away very impressed, then like everyone else had a good look at the new Hilux when it showed up. We like the Ranger already thanks to a host of visible upgrades from the last model and distancing its self from its twin the Mazda BT-50. Although the Hilux will undoubtably be a top sellor there are a few things that prevent the Ranger from achieving the volume necessary to catch up. Note the 2016 Toyota Hilux pricing and Ford Ranger pricing are both at the top end of the market.

Toyota Hilux vs For Ranger Mk2 exterior comparison: The updated Ranger looks good, better than the original release. The Ford Ranger’s bloated design language means it looks bigger and the front details makes it look like a smaller version of the F150. The mid range or XLT models have the best overall look as the to range Widetrak doesn’t look premium enough. The Hilux design is typical Toyota and has design clues from every model so its mostly inoffensive. It does look new from some angles and looking much like the outgoing model from others.

Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger Mk2 interior comparison: The Ford Ranger’s conservative interior design is very nice, semi-igital dash and screens are nicely integrated aka sensible. Materials are a acceptable compromise and mostly feels good to be in. However there are some fitting issues in the interior plastics. In comparison to the Ranger the new Hilux’s interior design is definitely cutting age with retro elements, when decked out in SR5 it looks good too and the fitting looks much better. Both Hilux and Ranger base models are a little sparse compared to the top range models so you really must see that model in person before deciding. These are primarily Light commercial vehicles (LCV) so you shouldn’t expect luxury materials – you’ll be satisfied. Both designs are very different and we think the modern Hilux actually quite good – after awhile.

Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger engines and technology comparison: Lots of tech in both but the simple engine choices namely 2 turbo diesels in the Ranger make it a winner. You can also get a Hi-Rider Ranger which is the model with 4WD ride height but without the 4WD gear. Unfortunately not all the safety tech is standard so you will need to pay extra. You also need to wary as the cheapest 4×4 Ranger models came with the low power 2.2 diesel! The Hilux has currently 5 engines to choose from including the ‘rip-off’ turbo turned down model which is simply doesn’t make sense. The equipment levels are good but does not reach high level of the Ranger especially on the safety systems, even if optional.

2016 Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger Mk2 drive comparison: Coming soon.

For us the logical best ute to buy is the Ford Ranger Mk 2. The Ranger admittedly needs all the spec it can get to compete against the Hilux since the price is higher is specs out. But the Ranger is part of a very new push by Ford so long term reliability and support is still unknown. If you dare look, there are consistent Ford Ranger problems are beginning to appear. There are plenty of Ranger models to choose from too so be wary of which engine it comes with.

The new Hilux is overall a nice upgrade and it will probably meet all the ‘legendary’ branding and marketing that surrounds this model. Toyota will not intentionally downgrade their image and cars like say Honda. Unfortunately with the branding comes the responsibility and there are also plenty of people who claim problems with the Hilux.

Finally both Utes are priced at the top end of the market and while there’s lots to like about both cars, Ford needs to get real about the Ranger – since its still an unknown long term reliability and the service backup stats rather than advertising that it comes with road side assistance.

Note that the specifications are for the most popular variant the 4×4 Dual-cab.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
