Competition between these two models are more in terms of concepts rather than specification as they are quid different and after all both target different customers but pricing pretty much overlaps on any model you choose. The new Fortuner fills in many gaps in the market and competes with so many models from Toyota and other manufacturers that it will take quite a while to cover them but it will be interesting and fun.

To start with the Fortuner is Hilux based SUV and the Kluger is a separate model. The Fortuner can go off road with a real 4WD system, diesel only engines while not specifically designed to carrying the family in comfort. On the other hand the Kluger is the complete opposite having the petrol only engine, missing 4WD gearbox and drive train and being a lot bigger for a family!

Toyota Fortuner Vs Toyota Kluger exterior: The Kluger looks big and is big on the road being what we would call van like rather than a traditional SUV. (It’s only missing the sliding side doors.) The Kluger is not sporty to look at with a conservative and mostly inoffensive sheet metal. The Kluger exterior design is once again the opposite of the Kluger with unexpected curves and design language that makes it look modern and familiar at the same time. The rising rear hip line is like the ’86’ is so well integrated you don’t even note it at first. The Fortuner design is a ‘fresh breath of air’ in the Toyota SUV range at the moment. We prefer the look of the Fortuner easily.

Toyota Fortuner Vs Toyota Kluger interior: The first obvious thing about the Kluger is space, there’s plenty of it and flexible layout. The Kluger interior design looks lounge like although the benchmark is the Honda Odossey, and the quality is pretty good. Thanks to the size fitting a child seat of two even three is very easy and there will be space to spare. Overall a typical Toyota in approach to design and typically feels minimal. The Fortuner interior is smaller and less flexible and the design is a Hilux wagon. Finally the Kluger is a true 7 seater whereas the Fortuner just happens to have extra seats which are not very useful at all. It doesn’t feel lounge like but its not too bad either. We prefer the comfy ambience of the Kluger.

Toyota Fortuner Vs Toyota Kluger engines and technology: The Kluger only comes with a carryover V6 and it’s not state of the art but is still surprisingly economical for a large 3.5 litres. We know its got some power behind it and as smooth as you’d get without being a Lexus. At the usual safety tech and incur entertainment system are there but nothing exceptional to note. The Fortuner only comes with the new 2.8 diesel with all all the fuel saving tech with competitive power to beat the others at least for this year. Thanks to the Fortuner’s relative light weight should be one of the better performers in the class. The Fortuner without delving into too much detail also has all the usual safety and in car entertainment and nothing to really note either. The major differences in tech spec is mainly the 4WD system and body construction although you would’t be able to tell by looking at them.

Toyota Fortuner Vs Toyota Kluger road test: N/A

Deciding between the two can be easy or tough depending on what you value most in a SUV. We like the Fortuner for its modern styling, the smaller interior, diesel only engine and 4WD ability. However we like also the Kluger’s larger size, quietness, refinement and even the surprisingly fuel efficient petrol engine and so forth but we are not enamoured with it’s looks. They are both really good packages but we’d pick the Fortuner over the Kluger as we do not need the size as much these days.

>

Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Kluger

Engines

1GD-FTV Diesel
Turbo-charged – Intercooler
Direct Injection – Common Rail
2.8 Litre (2755cc)
Claimed 130Kw @ 3400 RPM
Claimed 420-450Nm @ 1600 RPM

2GR-FE V6 Petrol
DOHC VVTi EFI
3.5 Litre (3456cc)
Claimed 201Kw @ 6200RPM
Claimed 337Nm @ 4700RPM

Weight

FROM 2120Kg
Towing capacity up to 3000kg

From 1950Kg Towing capacity up to 2000kg

Fuel capacity & consumption

Up to 80 litres
IL4 Diesel 8.2 lts per 100km (Auto)

72 litres (91 Unleaded)
V6 Petrol 10.6 litres per 100km

Other specifications

6 speed Auto or 5 speed manual
Overall height/width 1835/1855
Overall length/wheelbase 4795/2750
Tray Lxxx x Wxxx x Dxxx mm
Total payload capability 1000kg (Approx)
NCAP safety rating 5/5

6 speed Auto
Overall height/width 1730/1925
Overall length/wheelbase 4865/2790
NCAP safety rating 5/5
Tyre size: 245-55-19

Capability

Angle of: (degrees)
Approach xx Departure xx Breakover xx
Minimum ground clearance xxx mm
4WD system: 2WD or 4WD with low range

Angle of: (degrees) Approach ??
