New for 2016 the Hyundai Tucson is a notable update from the last model, the ix35 and the arch rival and competitor to the rather old Mazda CX-5. While the CX-5 is the top seller for many reasons we still prefer other models for equally good reasons, admittedly never the Hyundai ix35 or Tucson for equally good reasons. So how do they compare?

Hyundai Tucson vs Mazda CX-5 exterior comparison: The updated styling on the Tucson is very similar to the CX-5, as if what the next generation CX-5 could have looked liked. We like the Tucson’s styling but have to admit that it is on the conservative side. The CX-5 design is slightly awkward and a little dated in 2016. The Tucson wins the looks comparison.

Hyundai Tucson vs Mazda CX-5 interior comparison: The update interior of the Tucson is a decent upgrade from the last version and the revised design is really quite good. However as we have noted previously it does not match the exterior design. Only the top range ‘Platinum’ does it really work. The CX-5 has a good interior that sets the standard in terms of materials but we still don’t like the overall design. In terms of size its pretty much equal and there is something about the CX-5 that appeals. We call it a draw for this part of the comparison.

Hyundai Tucson vs Mazda CX-5 engines and technology comparison: This part is simple, the engines in the CX-5 are more advanced than the Tucson. It doesn’t need a turbo to be powerful and fuel efficient. The safety tech in the Tucson is slightly better than CX-5 but again only in the top range models, in the mid range Tucson particularly disppointing. There is more depth in engineering in Mazda and they should be and rewarded. It drives like a regular car should and certainly better than a few we’ve owned and sampled over the years.

Hyundai Tucson vs Mazda CX-5 drive : The CX-5 is a decent drive, the engine pulls well and makes a decent noise. Steering feel is like a regular car, not quite 2016 more 2006 hatch back. The ride was not luxurious but you get that when used to a Prado.

The Hyundai Tucson is a very good looking small SUV on the outside but a little ordinary on the inside. The Mazda CX-5 is simply an older model but can’t tell because the new Tucson merely matches the old CX-5 in terms of presentation and thanks to Mazda’s better engineering still one of the best small SUVs. In terms of price the Hyundai Tucson is competitive on the entry level models but is overpriced, on the other hand the CX-5 is overpriced on the top range model compared the seeming better value top range Tucson. So until we drive the new Tucson we can only conclude that the Mazda CX-5 comparison is a draw.

//
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
