As we roll out the last set of comparisons for the Ford Territory this means that the Subaru Outback also gets a look. The Subaru Outlack was one of the original high rise wagons and deserved positive reviews – we like the various versions over the years and driven a few too but in all honestly PR exceeded the actual experience.

Ford Territory Mk II Vs Subaru Outback exterior: The Ford Territory looks just like what you’d expect an SUV to look like and is nice but not aspirational. The Subaru Outback is a high rise Liberty wagon with some plastic cladding added and does look nice too, the latest update sees a few revisions to the plastic cladding designs but not much more. The Outback is very Japanese in appearance in a good way but it does look too much like it’s parent company Toyotas.

Ford Territory Mk II Vs Subaru Outback interior: The revised Outback comes with an updated interior focused on a dashboard redesign and better materials. This was quite a common tactic in the past for mid life Japanese car models to attract new buyers. We thought the older interior has a better design because the new one looks like superseded Toyota Camry but ‘improved’ materials is a nice touch although only brings it up to date with other cars like the existing Camry. The Ford Territory was designed over 10 years ago but it does show in the materials being used but it is acceptable and don’t feel short changed. Both have plenty of space too!

Ford Territory Mk II Vs Subaru Outback engines and technology: The Subaru Outback has been given all the latest safety systems including pedestrian avoidance, but the engines while relatively current are mated with a CVT. Both SUVs’ with 6 cylinder engines are the best ones to get and are reasonably economical. In the end though the the Territory lacks too many tech features to compete. The AWD system in the Outback is promoted as state of the art on or off road but only in a straight line. Regardless easy win to the Outback in this area.

Ford Territory Mk II Vs Subaru Outback road test: The Ford Territory has impressive ride and handling for the price and power as a 6 cylinder. The noisier diesel is good too and less annoying than the Outback. The Subaru has one of the best 6 cylinders on the market, it’s smooth powerful we love it. The ride in the Subaru is good – quiet, comfortable and bump absorbent but the CVT is annoying when trying to actually drive but the programming is good and there was only some extra revving on occasion but it was muted in the petrol engine haven’t tried the diesel Outback but by all accounts it is not particularly good. It is a boring drive on normal roads and due to its impressive ordinary-nees if there is such a word. Overall both are very good but the rear drive Territory is more fun at normal speeds the Subaru was too abrupt when cornering aka cutting corners.

The winner of this comparison is the Subaru Outback but only equipped with the 6 cylinder engine. The Ford Territory is shaded by the 6 cylinder Subaru Outback ignoring the new tech it has. The biggest problem with Subaru is of course the dealership pricing which basically means you usually add $5000 to whatever price you get. That said the base model can be bought for 35,990 which means it’s over the $40,000 range on road. Nonetheless for a safe, refined, comfortable and least annoying commuter and holiday hauler the Subaru Outback is hard to beat.

//
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
