The final versions of both SUVs are now on sale as they will be discontinued within the next 12 months! So we decide to have a look one last time and hence this comparison. Sure it&#8217;s unlikely anyone mainstream would cross shop between these two but since one us has an FJ and driven the Territory many times we do think that SUV and 4WD buyers do think different it.<\/p>\n<p>Ford Territory Mk II Vs Toyota FJ Cruiser exterior: The Ford Territory looks quite normal next to the FJ Cruiser. The FJ Cruiser is unique for a Toyota as it appeared as a concept car and transferred to production in 2 years! Toyota have tried daring designs before like past and surprisingly forgotten Celica and Supra models. The FJ Cruiser wins this part of the comparison as it does look great. It&#8217;s got retro styling, futuristic design touches and surprise in the cleverly hidden rear doors.<\/p>\n<p>Ford Territory Mk II Vs Toyota FJ Cruiser interior: The Ford Territory&#8217;s interior design and materials is modern and good quality, it&#8217;s not up to date with the latest SUV in the class but it&#8217;s not that far off. The interior was designed with passengers and their luggage in mind not off roading adventures in the desert. It has and interior which is nice to be in. \u00a0The FJ Cruiser has a purpose built interior designed to be capable of coping with the outdoors getting indoors, like first wand water and it is retro hence you either like it or dislike it. It is not a luxury interior with hard plastic but decent quality plastic everywhere drawing inspiration from the original FJ40 but it&#8217;s also dark inside so you won&#8217;t get a tan in a hurry. The retro design means that there are compromises like the blinds spots and flat windscreen but most of all it&#8217;s actually quiet on the inside. That said there is plenty of headroom, very wide and surprising extra rear doors with plenty of space but access is problematic if you are larger built although once inside there&#8217;s plenty of space. We prefer the Territory&#8217;s interior to be in but happy to compromise in the FJ Cruiser if not carrying passengers all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Ford Territory Mk II Vs Toyota FJ Cruiser engines and technology: The Ford Territory is based on the Ford Falcon and carries over a lot of its trails including good ride quality, power and handling we like it in 6 cylinder petrol form but diesel not so. All the tech is pretty up to date for 2016 but clearly it isn&#8217;t up there with the latest models. The Toyota FJ Cruiser is based on the 120 and 150 series Prado so it&#8217;s very good however there are obvious changes. The FJ&#8217;s engine is the same as the Prado also modern and produces plenty of power and great fuel economy for a V6 4 litre petrol engine. We get about 11.5-12 litres per 100km in heavy start stop city traffic with air conditioner which is amazing since the CRV does 12-13litre per hundred in the same traffic. The FJ Cruiser 4WD systems where updated with the latest ATRAC traction control systems a few years ago so makes the last series an amazingly capable 4WD out of the showroom.<\/p>\n<p>Ford Territory Mk II Vs Toyota FJ Cruiser road test: The Ford Territory drives great for a high rise wagon, rear wheel drive, nice steering, power and space make the only choice for most. There is very little complain about the Ford Territory in petrol form. The Toyota FJ Cruiser drives like a rear wheel drive sedan about 20 years ago, specifically a Holden Commodore VN-VP series. The FJ is powerful, can even break traction the rear end but tamed with traction control and driver throttle control. High profile tyres make the initial ride experience feel soft and more lean than normal but because you can actually feel what the rear end is doing making driving it enjoyable, only thing missing it real road feel from the from end and some vision. That said off road the ride and capability is amazing even with standard tyres, it literally smooths out any road you go over just amazing. The FJ also has all the latest in car navigation, bluetooth and iPhone\/Android connectivity although the system is not user friendly.<\/p>\n<p>We call this comparison between the Ford Territory and Toyota FJ Cruiser even. The Ford Territory is an efficient enjoyable SUV to be in and drive one of the best we&#8217;ve ever driven on the road it&#8217;s shows the latest SUVs that you don&#8217;t need hard suspension to handle well, compliant suspension, predictable power delivery and rear wheel drive! The FJ Cruiser clearly built for off road has impressive on-road ride that is comfortable and easily better than any dedicated &#8216;city&#8217; focused SUV e.g. BMW X3, CRV, Tucson, CX-5 and Santa Fe just to name a few. With rear wheel drive on road comfortable ride and even a soft exhaust burble inside the car make it an enthusiast choice.
