The CX-5 is a best seller for many reasons although we prefer other small-medium sized SUVs. The VW Tiguan was a desirable model for us when released but when we started comparing the specifications and pricing we concluded that it was a ‘rip off’ model. The main reasons was the turbo tuning they used to justify the higher price and their belief of the VW brand. Unfortunately their genuinely faulty DSG gearboxes and mysterious stalling and size meant that it was not a popular choice hence the new model. With the all new CX-5 coming in about 12 months this will probably the last we review this generation CX-5.

VW Tiguan Vs Mazda CX-5 exterior design comparison: Starting off with the Tiguan because it easy, the design is very conservative, they seem to have almost used the original design themes of the original Mitsubishi Outlander. Even in real life the Tiguan design is not a standout as it is anonymous as you could change the badge and it could be from any manufacturer. The CX-5 hasn’t really dated but it’s base model comes with steel wheels which is not acceptable in a car that costs over $27,000 and any other model in the range looks the same which is arguably the point to most but not us. It does mystify us as if we paid over $50,000 for top range model I would expect it is look different. Neither design excites us but the CX-5 at lest has some character.

VW Tiguan Vs Mazda CX-5 interior comparison: The VW Tiguan interior is a nice place to be if you select all the options but in standard trim it’s a step backwards which put us off since it is a new model and priced higher than the competition. Unlike others it takes more than a $2000 optional LCD dash to be impressed. The Mazda CX-5 interior despite being much older and smaller it still looks and feels good. The center stack still looks odd but at least consistent quality of materials. We like the office ambience interior of the Tiguan but don’t look to closely but overall prefer the CX-5 and so will you.

VW Tiguan Vs Mazda CX-5 engine and technology: There are plenty of safety features as standard in the Tiguan and so it should but they cut costs in the trim department by making most of the good stuff optional. As usual the turbo rip off in the Tiguan is disappointing and there is no class leading safety tech in the high end model grades despite being new. The CX-5 has all the safety tech in the 2017 update and a better sounding stereo system as well as well as cheaper price. It is worth pointing out that the Mazda has non-turbo engines that produce efficient and power that are arguably better than the ones in the Tiguan. Hence Mazda has the technical advantage.

VW Tiguan Vs Mazda CX-5 on road: N/A

The current model Mazda CX- is a very good SUV for the price if you get the 2017 models with the additional safety systems. With an all new CX-5 launching later this year it may be best to wait for it unless you get a convincing deal on the run out models. The VW Tiguan is a decent SUV too hampered by price and lower spec interior as the good stuff is optional. These additional packages may work in other countries but it is unlikely to work here since by the time everything is added in you may as well buy a genuine luxury brand eg. BMW or Mercedes. We believe that it is great PR by VW to release the new model ahead of the other manufacturers with all the safety gear is standard as they have a marketing head start. The conclusion simple for us, avoid the CX-5 until the new model arrives and definitely avoid the Tiguan.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
