With the release of the Suzuki Ignis the traditional small car market has a new competitor. While many regard the CX-3, CH-R, Ecosport, Trax and ASX as small SUVs, in real life they are not but admittedly the smallest one in any manufacturer model range. However the Suzuki Ignis is definitely a small SUV and currently the smallest available in the country. We consider small SUVs when it can fit 4 people in relative comfort. We also argue amongst ourselves whether the Ignis can be called an SUV because it is technically a small hatchback with a raised ride height but then all the small SUVs currently on sale are same even ones with AWD systems.

We’ve decided to compare the Ignis with the Swift since they are both small, have overlapping prices and made by the same manufacturer. Anyone looking to buy a small will cross shop between these two although there are notable differences.

Suzuki Ignis vs Suzuki Swift exterior comparison: First of all the obvious, an all new Swift will be released in mid-2017 whilst the Ignis is all new for 2017. The Ignis has a well proportioned and modern design with retro styling themes. It looks great in real life and has some character missing from many new car car designs. The Swift has always looked nice although never a standout and it is deliberate since the prior model looks very similar. The obvious thing is that the Swift is slightly larger and lower riding then the Ignis and that means that in reality they aren’t fighting for your money but having options is always good!

Suzuki Ignis Vs Suzuki Swift interior comparison: You have to remember that interior styling is all relative and for the price the interiors of both cars are very good. The all plastic interior of the Ignis is a decent place to be in bearing in mind it’s on the road price starting from around $16,000AUD and it comes with a lot of standard equipment. The interior honestly feels better than the asking price and the contrasting white trim is a nice touch. For a cheaper car all the controls better than expected. Both have similar perceived interior space but the Swift interior feels stretched in terms of space and the Ignis is more van like. The Swift is in it’s run out cycle is costs a mere $100o more but with a free auto at the moment means its ‘s great value of one of the best small cars. All that said the Swift interior is a nice place to be in but it is clearly an older design with cheaper looking and smooth dash top plastics compared to the Ignis with it’s nicely textured finish. The seats in the Swift rate a mention as one of the most comfortable and almost full sized compared to larger cars. Only in the top range Swift Sport model do you get and interior that impresses for the price.

Suzuki Ignis Vs Suzuki Swift engines and technology comparison: The Swift has all the basic safety tech of airbags, an assortment of braking systems and so forth. The Ignis also matches the Swift in terms of safety but exceeds the the Swift in terms of the in car entertainment. the standard 7 inch touch screen in the Ignis is superior to the model found in the Swift, even the optional Navigation system. While the stereo sound good in the Swift again only if you option it with the higher quality speakers however in standard trim the Ignis sounds just a good. It should also be noted that the Swift in some countries share the same engine as the Ignis so you guess which one will be the better performing car.

Suzuki Ignis Vs Suzuki Swift drive comparison: We’ve always like the way the Swift drives, it’s not noisy, rides OK as a small car and zippy. The best thing about the Swift driving experience is that is feels like a bigger car on the road. The most annoying thing was the speedo, which does not have the 50KPh displayed on it, the line indicating 50 is soften difficult to read. The normal Swift is not slow in terms of performance but is not a fast car either and best described and acceptable.

The winner of the Suzuki Ignis Vs Suzuki Swift is the Ignis. The Ignis wins because it comes with a ton of equipment even in standard trim that the current Swift does no have. The Ignis interior and exterior look good and has a fully connected stereo system. Finally the Ignis only comes the much desired raised driving position with drive away pricing and priced from approx $16,000 – 19,00o for the fully loaded Ignis it is a hard go past if you want a genuine small car or SUV. This opinion will probably change when the new Swift is released later this in october 2017.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
