We haven’t compared the Jeep renegade to any other competitor SUV for a while due to it’s uncompetitive package. However thanks to a price drop buy nearly $5000 AUD and increased equipment levels the Jeep Renegade is now worth a second look. The Hyundai Kona is the star of our latest and final round of comparisons for 2017 and so far has not really stood out of the crowd except for looks. So we decided to do a comparison to see if either is a winner.

Hyundai Kona Vs Jeep Renegade exterior comparison: We’ve said plenty about the good looking Kona being it’s only impressive feature so won’t continue. In comparison to the Jeep it looks like a high rise small hatchback that it really is. The Jeep Renegade is a modern interoperation of a classic Jeep and thanks to the retro design theme it stands out in the small SUV class and it look good too, just different. We prefer the Jeep’s styling as it is different and looks good but mainly because it reminds us of a motorshow concept car.

Hyundai Kona Vs Jeep Renegade interior comparison: As we’ve said before the Kona does not have a particularly high quality interior and hopefully that will change quickly. In comparison the Renegade has a much nicer interior. The design is clearly off road tradition SUV design so lots of hard plastics but they’re done a great job and you certainly feel that it is a nicer place to be in than the Kona quite easily. The higher end models have very flash dash and trim. Of note is the numerous more spacious room to move Jeep logos and off road design feature – quite nice.

Hyundai Kona Vs Jeep Renegade engines and and technology comparison: The biggest flaw of the Renegade is the requirement for at least 98 Octane petrol and tiny standard engine and the DCT automatic transmission. Jeep’s are not exactly known for reliability so a DCT Auto is a brave move. Mind you the current engine choices are much better than the ones when released in 2015. Don’t buy the base model Jeep Renegade is essentially what the spec sheet says. The 4WD system is a standout if you get the Trailhawk version. In comparison the Kona has decent engines but it it noticeably heavier and the top range turbo is probably the best engine to pick. Safety systems are pretty much equal although missing auto brakes is disappointing. The Renegade has the better stereo system, especially the BeatsAudio system when equipped.

Hyundai Kona Vs Jeep Renegade drive comparison: N/A

The winner of the Hyundai Kona Vs Jeep Renegade comparison is the Renegade. Since neither Kona or Renegade don’t have auto brakes across the range – The Kona really only has looks to commend it, everything else is just class standard. Ignoring historical and ongoing reliability problems across the range the Jeep Renegade is a worthy choice though as it comes with a ton of useful equipment including a flashy digital dash and impressive stereo system in the mid range models. Although the lack of auto brakes in the Renegade means it can’t win the comparison it is definitely the winner in every other respect in comparison to the Kona. Thanks to the price drop on the Renegade to make it competitive in the class we as forget the Hyundai Kona and buy the Jeep Renegade a go – can’t believe we wrote that… BUT just remember the reliability factor.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
