There have been a few high profile SUV releases this year but by far the most important is the all new Suzuki Jimny Sierra. Why is more important than the others? The Jimmy Sierra is special and the best micro SUV and genuine 4WD currently available in the world.

2018 Suzuki Jimny Sierra vs 2019 Suzuki Jimny Sierra exterior comparison: There are two models in the new range. The regular commercial focused Jimny with the 660cc engine and the Jimny Sierra the passenger focused with nicer trim and larger 1.6 litre engine. The Jinmy also has cosmetic additions in terms of wheel arch flares, slightly larger bumpers, paint options.

While the 2018 Jimny Sierra was a modern step forward design form 1998 it hasn’t aged and will likely be a classic. The 2019 Jimny Sierra is a retro remake more so than it’s stable make the Ignis. In fact to probably truer to the Jimny Sierra design language than even the FJ Cruiser or Wrangler. Retreo design touches includes actual rain gutters. That said both are good looking in their own way!

2018 Suzuki Jimny Sierra vs 2019 Suzuki Jimny Sierra interior comparison: The same theme applies to the interior design. The 2018 interior was the same as the 1998 version, modern for it’s time but has aged as well but more so than it’s exterior styling. The 2019 Jimny Sierra is a so a retro remake and interpretation. Suzuki have done a great job with blocked teired dash and separate low range gear box lever, boxed instruments but updated it with LED information displays from regular Suzuki cars. The 2019 Jinmy interior despite being all hard plastic is the better looking. It has more glovebox space than the Amarok too.

2018 Suzuki Jimny Sierra vs 2019 Suzuki Jimny Sierra engines and technology comparison: There’s a reason why the Jimny is such a tough 4WD as it’s still equipped with solid front and rear axles but there are modern tech features such as hill decent, brake hold, traction control in 4WD that help like diff locks, lane watch, ABS, lots of airbags and even auto brakes if specified.

2018 Suzuki Jimny Sierra vs 2019 Suzuki Jimny Sierra comparison is the 2019 Jimny. I’m not sure what the business case is for redesigning a Jimmy which is 20 years old when they could have just updated the interior/exterior and added the requisite modern safety systems and it would still sell. Admitted there are body, engines and equipment changes that modernise but then make it look retro will appeal to a younger generation that still knows about the Jimmy’s and Sierra’s of past decades? Does the new commercial or rugged body appeal to businesses or does it appeal to off roaders and motorhome crowd or city dweller in particular Europe and India. The answer is all yes. If you want a small, retro, genuine 4WD then the only choice is the Jimmy Sierra. How much will it cost? Under $20000 AUD top range model would be good…

Suzuki Jimmy Sierra

Suzuki Jimny

Engines

IL 3 Cylinder
DOHC EFI VVT
.66 litres (1242cc)
Claimed 47Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 96Nm @ 4100RPM

IL 4 Cylinder (M13A)
DOHC EFI VVT
1.3 Litre (1328cc)
Claimed 62.5Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 110Nm @ 4100RPM

IL 4 Cylinder
DOHC EFI VVT
1.5 Litre (1328cc)
Claimed 75Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 130Nm @ 4100RPM

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1000 Kg
Towing capacity up to N/A kg

Kerb weight 1060 –
