This is the new Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 comparison for 2019. These are two of the most popular small to medium sized SUV models currently on sale. They are not our top choices in the class but the prior models joined us for a few years for various reasons detailed in prior reviews. Since both have been updated with new bodies and interiors hence worth updated comparisons.<\/p>\n

Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 exterior design: Both are contrasting designs so it’s easy to tell them apart. We like the sporty or stylish lines of the CX-5 and yet the RAV4 with it’s off roader inspired lines appeal too. Both are roughly the same size and both hide their size well. Now ,the RAV4 may be a new design but it is not a flashy design. It looks a lot like a number of different but exisiting SUVs currently on sale form the VW Tiguan, any number of Jeeps and the Holden Equinox and Arcadia. It definitely resembles the 4Runner and Tacoma models sold only in North America. Strangely it does not look look like the stylish CH-R Fortuner or Kluger models which are available world wide.<\/p>\n

Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 interior: The interior size of the two are comparable they seem specifically designed to compete against each other yet with different approaches. The interior of the CX-5 especially in the higher grade models are easily described as a premium interior. Seating is comfortable although and were the right size rather than described as generous. The new RAV4 is also a nice place to be in but it’s not on the same level, admittedly the materials are similar in quality just not designed to be flashy but modern and durable. For example the RAV4’s rubberised dials are not as premium as the metal like ones in the CX-5.<\/p>\n

Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 engines and technology: Like the exterior and interior both use different paths in terms of engine technology. Mazda makes the most advanced non-turbo petrol engines on the planet but they have a twin turbo diesel option and a turbo petrol option which is new for 2019. Unfortunately it can’t beat the state of art Hybrid Engine technology in the new RAV4. Toyota makes the most advanced, efficient and popular system in the world and they’ve fitted it to the latest RAV4. Sure it may not be the most advanced version in the latest Prius but it’s better due to the inclusion of AWD system. Both CX-5 and RAV4 have the latest safety systems dependent on model grade so you’re missing anything. That said the RAV4 has a more complete set that includes the base model with adaptive cruise control across the entire model range unlike the CX-5. No secret we prefer driving gear automatics a CVTs are not enjoyable and only become decent if there are ‘fixed’ ratios built into the CVT. However all Hybrids have a CVT to minimise fuel consumption which is only logical as so we can’t really complain.<\/p>\n

The conclusion to the new Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 comparison is probably the RAV4. Why? While the CX-5 has the look feel and non-turbo and a powerful turbo engine to commend it there is little else. In comparison the RAV4 that comes equipped with Hybrid engine that makes it almost as quick but more importantly more efficient owing than the CX-5, even if the Mazda has the diesel engine optioned. The price range of the RAV4 also sees the win as it’s cheaper and even more advanced safety tech than in the CX-5.<\/p>\n
