Once again two of the most popular name badges on the market at the moment. Both are arch rivals in the class and when compared, each has it’s advantages and disadvantages. We have the showroom comparison here as we haven’t driven either models yet although owned the last RAV4 and driven the X-Trail in it’s prior generation.

Toyota RAV4 vs Nissan X-Trail exterior design : The new RAV4 is clearly designed using the North American Tacoma and 4Runner models which is at odds with the other SUVs in the Toyota range including the CH-R, Fortuner and the Kluger. The front end may have some character but the rest the RAV4 is on the anonymous side of things. The X-Trail is a nice and conservative looking SUV with a more aggressive front end than the last model but not quite the same level as the RAV4, meanwhile the side and rear profile is similar theme to the RAV4 by being very conservative.

Toyota RAV4 vs Nissan X-Trail interior: The RAV4 interior is completely modern design using the latest Toyota interior design language, it looks and feels good in a contemporary way. The only real flaw is the tablet styled stereo system screen which like most units looks cheap. While not exactly upmarket in looks or feel it is acceptable for a new model in 2019. The X-Trail in comparison does not have a completely modern interior but in the top range models looks and feels good and more welcoming to be in. There is also a 7 seat X-Trail option which can be useful but it is not value for money compared to a genuine luxury people mover available in the same price range.

Toyota RAV4 vs Nissan X-Trail engines and technology: The RAV4 has state of the art Hybrid engine technology for 2019 but with the cheaper 2 litre and a 2.5 litre engine options at both ends of the range. All the safety systems are there from the base model and include auto brakes and adaptive cruise control missing in the X-Trail range. The RAV4 also comes with a nice sounding stereo system but pity about the user interface. There is little to complain about since only the Hybrid engines come with the CVT. In comparison the X-Trail has only a petrol and turbo diesel engine options and quite ordinary since neither are particularly powerful or efficient. Hampered by a CVT does not help the entertaining driving department. However those who buy these SUVs prefer quiet and cushioned rides not sport car firmness or harshness.

Toyota RAV4 vs Nissan X-Trail street cred: There is very little street cred in owing either X-Trail or RAV4 as they are seen purely as reliable commuters in the case of the RAV4 and a value factor for the X-Trail.

The conclusion to the new Toyota RAV4 vs Nissan X-Trail comparison is the RAV4. The RAV4 wins the comparison due to to price for features, that said there are few specials out for the RAV4 at the moment purely due to being a brand new model.We don’t expect too many in the next few months especially for the Hybrid versions. Nonetheless they are cheaper for the package than the the the X-Trail isn’t on special. The X-Trail still looks OK on the outside but the engine and safety systems need an upgrade hence at it’s current selling price is no longer value for money. The largely pun intended 7 seat version is just a marketing and expensive option.

// google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2027171236681273";
