The RAV4 is a very good package of safety and technology compared to the competition in the class. In comparison the Tiguan is not. The fatal flaw in the VW Tiguan is price for features and we don’t think that will change in this comparison or will it?

Toyota RAV4 vs VW Tiguan exterior design : Both are arch rivals in terms of marketing and positioning. As a result both follow that same brand design philosophy. Conservative looks with a more aggressive front end and next to no use of chrome. While the RAV4 is more up to date in terms of styling the Tiguan hasn’t moved far from the last model instead adding more chrome to the front end in the attempt to give them a lift. Unfortunately Tiguan’s makes them look older than it should.

Toyota RAV4 vs VW Tiguan interior: The Tiguan has a conventional and classic T-Bar design. Materials used throughout the cabin are very good too but no different to the RAV4 both just have different designs. The metal like trim in the Tiguan are there to give it a more upmarket look than the silver highlights in the RAV4. The Tiguan interior feels like a quality place to be in as it feels arguably more solid than the RAV4 but it is very 90’s in ambience. However to get the Tiguan’s nicer seats and bigger screens as seen in the brochure means you need to hit the option packages. There is now a 7 seat version of the Tiguan that was introduced this year. In comparison the RAV4 has a good interior regardless of model, it’s not flashy either but feeling more modern and very 2019.

Toyota RAV4 vs VW Tiguan engines and technology: The Tiguan has changed the equipment package since release, including more equipment like auto emergency brakes as standard. However you need to hit the optional packages to get the look and features as the brochure. The engine situation in 2019 has seen the addition of a smaller and less powerful entry 1.4 petrol but still the same turbo tuning rip off with the 2.0 litre turbo. The DSG auto gearbox is still a reliability mystery likewise the durability of the turbo in the Tiguan. Simply put the RAV4 has more advanced engine, drive train and safety systems than the Tiguan as standard. It may not be faster but it is much more fuel efficient can run on basic 91 Octane unleaded.

The conclusion and winner of the Toyota RAV4 vs VW Tiguan comparison is simple, the RAV4: The Tiguan’s turbo tuning trickery engine variants is a not a good idea and it is a rip off – pure and simple. While the Tiguan’s price has dropped there are still options to pick before you get what you see in the brochure. Honestly is required if you’re paying this sort of money. You have to ask yourself before buying a Tiguan whether the flashy digital dash is worth an extra $2000 odd dollars and always using the more expensive premium unleaded petrol if your sort of MO. In comparison the RAV4 is great value especially if you get the Hybrid version and IF you can get one because they are on back order.

<td style="text-align: left;
