We didn’t have chance to check out the ‘new’ Outback until recently due to lockdowns and shortages. Being one of the first to market with the ‘original’ SUV concept the Outback is a refinement of the concept and this generation is claimed all new depth being virtually identical to the last model. The new Mitsubishi Outlander, a name clearly derived from the Outback promises to be an interesting comparison.

Mitsubishi Outback Vs Subaru Outback exterior comparison: Subaru may claiming is an all new model but to be honest to doesn’t look it. Furthermore the it is still more a high rise wagon than a 2022 version of an SUV. In terms of design it is neither a step forward of back as it looks virtually identical without the older model next to it. The Outlander similar a boring design but completely different to he prior model as this one use the X-Trail design. We prefer the front end design of the Outlander to the Outback but that said the overall Subaru Outback as a nice contemporary sleeker design which we prefer.

Mitsubishi Outback Vs Subaru Outback interior comparison: Both interiors are nice places to be in but the Subaru is the better one and more upmarket version – dependent on model grade of course. The real difference is in the seating design where the Outback is more car like and the Outlander is van like.

Mitsubishi Outback Vs Subaru Outback engines and technology: Both use carry over engines and safety tech that has been updated from prior model, so nothing new to write about here. The Subaru AWD system of note is great at going in straight lines. It’s great at cornering too because it forces the driver to slow down as it understeers like a truck by 2022 standards. Both will do mild tracks without any issues so there is really no reason to buy a more genuinely capable model if you don’t need it that said there aren’t any to choose from in the price range anymore. Apart from the utes aka light commercials of course.

In conclusion and winner to the Mitsubishi Outback Vs Subaru Outback comparison is neither. That said the Outback would be the winner if it was more ‘2022 SUV’ interior. After all the Outback has the nicer interior and more performance, safety as so forth. The Outback is literally a high rise sedan based wagon and a low key one. The Outlander doesn’t win because of the price, it is quite expensive compared to the Outback.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

Subaru Outback

Engines

IL Petrol (91 Octane)
DOHC Engine EFI
2.4 Litre (2488cc)
Claimed 135Kw @ 6000RPM
Claimed 245Nm @ 3600RPM

4 Cylinder Petrol
2.5 Litre (2498cc)
DOHC EFI VVT
Claimed 138Kw @ 5800RPM
Claimed 245Nm @ 3400RPM

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1725Kg
Towing capacity up to 1600kg

Kerb weight FROM 1600Kg
Towing capacity up to 2000Kg

Fuel capacity &
