Yet another competitor to the Corolla Cross is the Hyundai Kona. This is not a like for like comparison despite both models being base on donor hatchbacks or sedans. We wrote this comparison due to pricing crossover.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Hyundai Kona exterior design: The Hyundai Kona started off as the conservative looking i30 hatchback then given the high-rise treatment and a more aggressive front end which honestly look good, unfortunately it was then updated to the current odd looking design. The Kona N package is nice but underdone since the Hybrid Corolla Cross is just as fast in the rear world. Let’s face it, who uses launch control at the traffic lights? In comparison the Corolla Cross may have started off as a Corolla underneath but the result is quite different. The end result is an even more conservative SUV aka high rise wagon. Although we wished for a more updated design, we guess buyers in this class are similarly conservative.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Hyundai Kona interior: The interior of both models are the essentially the same as their donor hatchbacks. The main differences like the length of the central stack. While the interior design of the Corolla Cross is similar to the Kona the materials used in the Corolla Cross are at least a level or two above the Hyundai. We always feel a little unimpressed when in the Kona regardless of model grade, which is best described as entry level.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Hyundai Kona engines and technology: Both have similar levels of safety equipment and gadgets, as in pretty basic and the Kona falls short by having them tiered by model grade. Like the Kona’s interior it is not impressive. One thing that does lift the Kona brand is the availability as an all electric power train but at a cost that makes it incomparable with the Corolla Cross or even the Tesla. Yes and unfortunately the Kona is overpriced and under spec’d. You could buy the top range Corolla Cross and still fill it with petrol for 10 years and still be ahead in terms of money saved whereas you’d need to buy a new battery of the Kona by that time. You could even buy a base Tesla for less than the Kona. The Kona also offers the N series which is their performance model which is a turbo tweaked version of the base engine with some spoilers and a loud exhaust which sounds decent but a little too cringle worthy like a poorly tuned aftermarket one. Each to their own.

The conclusion and winner of the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Hyundai Kona comparison is the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The Corolla Cross in Hybrid form is arguably the best choice in terms of price and package. It’s just as fast as a the Kona in everyday driving without the wings more comfortable and cheaper to run. Sure the Corolla Cross costs slightly more than the Kona but the difference is easily countered by the positives and cost over the longer term.

Toyota Corolla Cross

Hyundai Kona

Engines

4 Cylinder Petrol
2 Litre (1987cc) 91 Octane
DOHC EFI VVT
Claimed 126Kw @ 6600RPM
Claimed 202Nm @ 4400RPM

4 Cylinder petrol G4NH
2 Litre (1999cc) 91 Octane
DOHC VVT EFI
Claimed 110Kw @ 6200 RPM
Claimed 180Nm @ 4500 RPM

4 Cylinder Petrol Hybrid
2.0 Litre (1987cc)
DOHC EFI VVT
Claimed 146Kw @ 4000RPM
Claimed 190Nm @ 3600RPM

4 Cylinder petrol G4FJ
1.6 Litre (1591c) 91 Octane
DOHC VVT EFI Turbo
Claimed 130Kw @ 5500 RPM
Claimed 265Nm @ 1500 RPM

4 Cylinder petrol
2 Litre (1998c) 91 Octane
DOHC VVT EFI Turbo
Claimed 206Kw @ 5500 RPM
Claimed 392Nm @ 1500 RPM

Electric motor
Claimed 150Kw

Weight

Kerb weight FROM 1400Kg
Towing capacity up to 750kg
*Depending on engine type

From Approx Kerb weight 1366 Kg
Towing capacity up to 800kg

Fuel capacity &
