Both are two of the newest models in the compact SUV class and both are arguably the best models in the class they were even released at the same time in early 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As you probably know by now the new CX-5 replaces the stylish CX-7 and to be completely honest the exterior design is let down. Sure the CX-5 looks good but no where near as desirable as the CX-7. On the inside the CX-5 has better materials but a conventional design, the CX-7 looks better but has lower materials.<\/p>\n<p>The Subaru XV \u00a0is all new and based on the similarly new regular Imprezza range. \u00a0The exterior design of the XV looks great and we believe due to the extra plastic cladding and alloys. Without these bits the XV would look a little plain. \u00a0The interior for a Subaru is a significant improvement on all of the past Subaru models. \u00a0The dash a very solid and the quality of materials is pretty good for a cheaper car. There are still some noticeable parts like the gear knob and exposed metal that annoy. We think the XV&#8217;s interior is more like a Toyota with some great modern touches unique to Subaru. We also think it strange that despite better materials and design the doors are as light as a feather &#8211; although that applies to all Japanese cars.<\/p>\n<p>Until we drive both we can only compare them based on on technical specifications and claimed performance figures. Based on these specifications the Mazda CX-5 comes out slightly ahead. However in the real world the XV is very impressive for a Subaru. The XV has the IT factor that the CX-5 is missing &#8211; which is a surprising turn around for the two brands. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Note that the new petrol engine looks great in terms of technical specifications but we were expect more to come as the new WRX is yet to be released. \u00a0When we checked out the pricing the Subaru XV is also better value as it comes with AWD only even the base model &#8211; at least in this country.
