We put this comparison and review purely out of interest. The 2012 Pajero is a direct relative of the old NM series first introduced in 2001 only the panels were re-designed. Life spans of many SUVs are longer than the car counterparts for economic reasons and the Pajero along with the Nissan Patrol are two examples whose basic design dates back over ten years. For both companies we believe that it is due to cost factors.

The 2012 Pajero’s now conservative exterior hasn’t dated too badly but most of the interior has. Many parts still look and feel are good but most feel old school but clearly durable as there has been no changes. The SUV’s technology is still up to date just presentation needs more work. When the original NM series was released it was called awkard – it was based on the rally cars on the day. Selling to a conservative market to compete with the LandCruiser Prado especially after the release of the 120 series was always going to tough since the Prado out specced it almost everywhere that counted.

The short wheel base (SWB) Pajero (NS series) was the equivalent of a hot hatch due to having the same engine in a lighter body. Unfortunately it was not very popular due to unrealistic pricing.

Although the Pajero has never sold in the numbers that the company would like it, we think it is worth considering especially against the 150 series Prado which is around $10,000 more for the same specifications – especially when there are specials. The top range Pajero is not worth the over $70,000 price tag especially in 2012.

Mitsubishi Pajero NS-NW series

Mitsubushi Pajero NM-NP Series (Up to 2001-2006)

Engines

6G75 (Update)
V6 Petrol
Single Cam 24 value MIVEC EFI
3.8 Litre (3828cc)
Claimed 175Kw @ 5500RPM (Manual)
Claimed 184Kw @ 6000RPM (Auto)
Claimed 329Nm @ 2750RPM

4M41
IL4 Diesel
DOHC 16 valve Turbo charged with intercooler
Direct injection
3.2 Litre (3200cc)
2009 UPGRADE
Claimed 147Kw @ 3800RPM
Claimed 441Nm @ 2000RPM
2006-2009 Specs
Claimed 118Kw @3800RPM (Manual)
Claimed 125Kw @2000RPM (Auto)
381Nm @ 2000RPM (Manual)
373Nm @ 2000RPM (Auto)

6G75
V6 Petrol
Single Cam 24 value MIVEC EFI
3.8 Litre (3828cc)
Claimed 150Kw @ 5000RPM (Auto)
Claimed 314Nm @ 3250RPM

4M41
IL4 Diesel
DOHC 16 valve Turbo charged with intercooler
Direct injection
3.2 Litre (3200cc)
Claimed 118Kw @3800RPM (Manual)
Claimed 121Kw @2000RPM (Auto)
381Nm @ 2000RPM (Manual)
373Nm @ 2000RPM (Auto)

Weight

Kerb weight 1900Kg
Towing capacity up to 3000Kg

FROM 2130Kg
Towing capacity up to 3500kg

Fuel capacity &
