Welcome to the VW Amarok vs Ford Ranger comparison for 2018. It’s been awhile since the last Amarok review so we decided to compare it to one of the best sellers in the class. There has been a few changes to the Amarok over the years but unsurprisingly the Ranger has not had any  significant updates.

VW Amarok vs Ford Ranger exterior comparison: The Amarok was the first of a new generation of larger boxy utes. It has stood the test of time and still looks like what a Hilux form the 1990’s but updated. The Ford Ranger is a good looking ute and resembles the US only F-series trucks. It’s hard to choose which one is better but pushed the Amarok is better due to the better quality and thicker paint job.

VW Amarok vs Ford Ranger interior comparison: The 2018 Amarok features an updated interior design, primarily of the updated stereo and infotainment system. Definitely looks more practical with proper air vents and the good quality plastics. It now matches the rest of the VW range due to shared parts. The Ranger has a good interior, conservative design although little spartan but the instruments and stereo system lifts it ahead of the Amarok.

VW Amarok vs Engines and Technology: First of all the Amarok persists with the turbo tweaking trick which is a rip off. Australians do not appreciate being ripped off and this is a perfect example. Nonetheless the engines in the Amarok are modern and have decent power, the top range V6 Diesel is powerful and unique merely for being a V6 and turbo diesel. Most of the Amarok’s 4WD range also has constant AWD so it is primarily safer than the Ranger. However the number of turbo failure’s in VW are something you need to consider. The Ford Ranger only has the one turbo diesel engine but by all accounts is a good one. The loosness of the engine is a concern for longevity though. Safety systems are good in both utes but not leading edge compared to cars.

VW Amarok vs Ford Ranger drive comparison: NA

To conclude the winner of the Volkswagen Amarok Vs Ford Ranger comparison is the Ford Ranger. The Amarok can never win a comparison while it continues the turbo tweaking rip-off. The Ranger is overpriced compared to the latest pared down Amarok range. The biggest positive of the Amarok is that it has a genuine top range model with a powerful engine, visual updates and interior fittings. The added bonus of AWD in the popular buyers $50,000 price range has AWD as standard. So it’s a pity that VW persists with the turbo tuning rip-off hence the Ranger is thus the default winner of this comparison rather than being the better model to buy.
