Welcome to the all new Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V comparison for 2017. The Honda HR-V is one of best models in the small SUV class at the time of this comparison. It has just enough of everything to be a desirable purchase. The new Hyundai Kona is a good looking small SUV based on the i30 hatch and unfortunately it didn’t have more pluses than the Mitsubuishi ASX in our last comparison. So how does it compare against the HR-V?
Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V exterior comparison: The HR-V when released was a standout in terms of design largely because there where few competitors. Over the years the HR-V design has mellowed but it still looks modern enough. The HR-V looks like a high rise prior generation Civic and not the much reported Jazz, which is interesting since it is much larger than the donor Jazz. The new Kona looks good in a 90’s sort of way due to the black plastic flared wheel arches. It does remind us of the Subaru XV and like it the Kona will age quickly due the the fading plastics. We prefer the Kona’s looks it’s just nicer to look at.
Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V interior comparison: The HR-V interior is a nice place to be in regardless of model grade. The design is not as modern as Honda’s other cars as it is more conservative and deliberately retro, witness the air vents and instrument panel. But it has modern touches like large display screen with touch controls to complement the look. The Hyundai Kona’s biggest flaw is the interior is the design and quality and that word is cheap. No attempt is made to hide the lower quality materials all the more disappointing that it doesn’t use the same interior as the donor i30. Sure it’s not that bad but it’s not
Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V engines and and technology comparison: The Kona has decent engines that are capable of shifting the 1300 or more kilos. The Kona’s more powerful turbo engine is the best choice in the range despite being matched to a DCT gearbox. Likewise the safety systems which are either optional or standard the high end model grades. The HR-V has a decent non-turbo 1.8l engine that is adequate for the 1300kg body with a standard CVT which should prove more reliable and not exciting. Unfortunately the full safety pack is only available on the top range HR-V. In terms infotainment the the Kona has Apple and Android compatibility and the HR-V does not but at least it seems to sound slightly better. There is nothing special about either SUV in this area.
Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V drive comparison: N/A.
The winner of the Hyundai Kona Vs Honda HR-V comparison is a tie. The Kona could have been an easy winner with a powerful turbo engine but the cheap interior and DCT gearbox for the turbo engines in 2017 is a bit of a reliability risk? It is a good first effort though for the company. The HR-V is a good overall package feel better to be in the the Kona although the CVT means it is a commuter not a racer. If the HR-V had more safety features in the base model and a more powerful engine it would easily win this comparison.
