Welcome to the new Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru XV comparison for 2020. The closest match to the new CX-30 is the Subaru XV, in terms of packaging. The major difference is that he XV has AWD as standard across the range hence the higher starting price. Apart from that is is a pretty close match and worth a comparison.

Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru XV exterior design :  The XV has been around for a few years and is one of the better looking smallish SUVs. However it’s no longer a standout in the increasing number of similar aggressive small SUVs. The ‘sleek’ looking CX-30 is similar to other Mazda’s which is it’s main problem but also one of the better looking small SUVs on sale in 2020. That said we don’t think it should be classed as an SUV due to minimal ride height increase and the lack of AWD on most models.

Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru XV interior: The XV is based on the regular Subaru Impreza and it’s recently interior is one of the nicest in the class. In fact one of the best looking designs with higher quality materials that puts the majority of it’s competitors to shame eg. the plastic bucket-esque interior of the Hyundai Kona. However compared to the CX-30 the XV feels less elegant and not quite as upmarket – but still impressive for the class.

Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru XV engines and technology: The XV has a lot of safety systems as standard and arguably sets the benchmark when released. However the CX-30 has just as many and better as you progress up the models grades. The engine choices in the CX-30 make it faster and more fuel efficient experience which the XV has a unique but less efficient F4 engine with a CVT. Now, Subaru CVTs are pretty good by CVT standards but we liken them to 3 speed automatics equipped to 4 cylinder engines of the past. It has the right gear a lot of the time but often not the right one when you need it. The cheap sounding stereo in the XV is a real problem (even the base Corolla sounds better) and virtually eliminates it from our list on SUVs to consider. The CX-30 does have AWD it the top range spec but nothing else across the range so the Subaru XV is better value of money – relatively.

The conclusion to the new Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru XV comparison draw. If you want AWD then the XV is the only model to pick. However you will need to live with reluctant covering ability, CVT and under par sound quality, common to all Subaru’s without the optional BOSE system. It is overall cheaper than the CX-30 while the AWD system is only available in the top range and rather expensive top spec CX-30 at the time of this comparison. We recommend waiting for a Subaru XV or Mazda CX-30 on sale before considering.
