Here’s a comparison between the Nissan X-Trail and the Mitsubishi Outlander for 2018. It’s been about 3 years since that last comparison and with the Outlander receiving an update we decided to compare the two models again furthermore we had a look at the updated Outlander PHEV model.
Nissan X-Trail vs Mitsubishi Outlander exterior: The most important change for the Outlander the the redesign front and rear end the made it look more conventional. Mitsubishi is known for taking chances with forward thinking designs but inevitably redesign them to a more conservative and clone like designs at the first refresh. The masses just are not ready for the future we guess. Hence brave designs do not help sales in the mass market category that the outlander sells in. In the end the X-Trail is the better looking SUV as the design was entirely planned from the start.
Nissan X-Trail vs Mitsubishi Outlander interior: The interior of the X-Trail uses the same design styling as all the other Nissan’s and it is still a nice place to be but looking a little old compared to other brands but not compared the Outlander. The Outlander’s interior is nice enough but it looks even older than the X-Trail but all the space and storage is better.
Nissan X-Trail vs Mitsubishi Outlander engines and technology: The X-Trail has been updated with auto brakes across the range and as a great bonus but apart from that there is nothing out of the ordinary. The Outlander likewise has all the same safety systems but it is missing auto brakes across the range. Engines and transmissions are all old school including diesel option but the Outlander trumps the X-Trail by being the first Hybrid SUV model. Sure the all electric range of the Outlander PHEV is less than 80Km but you always have the petrol engine to continue for hundreds of kms as per a normal hybrid. Of which the 2019 PHEV has a larger 2.4 litre engine bigger batteries and more powerful electric motors.
Nissan X-Trail vs Mitsubishi Outlander drive: N/A
The conclusion to Nissan X-Trail Vs Mitsubishi Outlander is the Outlander. Not much has changed in 3 years – sure the Outlander doesn’t have auto brakes across the range just warnings of a collision but it is available on most of the range plus the availability of the PHEV model out weighs that feature in the base models which few people buy. Regardless both are older models have regular petrol and diesel engines that only make sufficient power and economy. One final note related to the pricing of the Outlander PHEV and that it’s on the expensive side when you take into account the Prius but it’s a bargain compared to other brands including the tiny 2019 Renault Zoe which is pure electric but priced the same as the Outlander PHEV.
