Welcome to the Mitsubishi Triton vs Ford Ranger comparison for 2018. It’s been about 3 years since the last Triton review and up against the popular Ranger is always going to be an interesting comparison. Mind you neither model has changed much in a noticeable way. The Triton is the most affordable 4×4 Dual cab use on sale by a major manufacturer and the Ford Ranger is expensive for what it comes with. That said the Ranger is a good ute and certainly one of the best in the class.
Mitsubishi Triton vs Ford Ranger exterior comparison: In terms of looks not much has changed to either Utes and both still quite a contrast. The Triton has always been the more modern looking truck where as the Ranger is a conservative and has similar look to the F150 although it does look like the cheaper model. The modern design appeals but the box is also has it’s appeal.
Mitsubishi Triton vs Ford Ranger interior comparison: The interiors are similar yet different. The Triton has a design and materials that reflects it’s price so it’s mainly hard plastics but with decent buttons, switches, seat comfort. Overall the Triton interior is best described as older but decent. The Ranger’s interior is a nicer place to be due to the SUV style and spartan design. Think of it as a entry level sedan interior and you won’t be disappointed. We prefer the Ranger interior.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Ford Ranger engines and technology comparison: Interestingly the Triton has the more advanced transmission, being either RWD or selectable AWD on normal roads. In all other respects the Ranger and Triton are pretty much equal in terms of tech features including infotainment stereo system. However the Triton adds HID lights and LEDs and the AWD that are missing from the Ranger. In terms of engine comparisons the Triton has a decent turbo diesel considering it’s small 2.4 litre displacement but the Ford out powers the Triton easily due to higher capacity engine hence power but a 6 gear auto vs 5 speed. That said the Triton isn’t exactly slow merely having 10% less torque an 14Kw less and notably lighter. Both have their reliability issues known so the winner is definitely the Triton due to being able to select AWD on the freeway.
Mitsubishi Triton Vs Ford Ranger drive and street cred: Summary, the Triton is a decent drive, firmish suspension and reasonably direct steering, it’s quite smooth, not too noisy apart from the engine. Press the AWD button for a notably reassuring and solid ride and feels a touch sporty sort of… However in terms of street cred the Ford Ranger is hard to beat in 2018.
The winner Mitsubishi Triton Vs Ford Ranger comparison is the Triton. The Triton easily wins by being $10,000 cheaper than the Ranger for the most popular models without the 4WD where as the Triton has it as standard and approx $16,000 cheaper for the top range models. That’s a huge price difference in comparison to the top range Triton Exceed to the top end Ranger Wildtrak. You can’t even get a 4WD system in the mid range Ranger for the price of the Ranger topper Triton Exceed. Easy win for the Triton. Buy the Triton and with the price saving put a deposit on a new house or even a investment property for the price difference and travel the world for 6 months. That said there are plenty of deals for both models so shop around and bargain hard.
