Welcome to 2023!  This is the new Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Corolla comparison for 2023. The most important SUV release for late 2022 is arguably the Toyota Corolla Cross. The Corolla Cross due to it’s link with the normal Corolla targets the ‘just right package’ for the entire SUV class but how different is it from the normal Corolla? As usual we decided to compare them meaningfully is this review.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Corolla exterior design: The Corolla Cross is a conservative and generic design, arguably the most normal looking model in the current Toyota line up but we aren’t sure it truly resembles the donor Corolla. Even the wagon version which is also available in Europe badged as a Suzuki has a different profile to the Corolla Cross.  The only difference between the model grades is the size and style of the alloy wheels – so it is understated. In comparison the Corolla is decent looking traditional hatchback or sedan design. The side profiles are very Toyota like, however the front and rear ends are more unique in the class. That said there aren’t many smallish hatches and sedans on sale anymore. The best description the Corolla design is that it is nicer than the Corolla Cross.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Corolla interior: Toyota interiors have never been the style trend setters but designs that are entirely functional and durable – when they where first released. The biggest design flaw is of course the drivers seat side rest which just wears prematurely from use in every single Toyota we’ve seen, been in or owned. Both Corolla and Corolla Cross share the same interior design and overall it’s nice. However it lacks the contemporary design touches of say the HRV or Civic which initially looks minimal but easily level above in terms of ambience. We also have to point out that the Corolla interior feels more market than the Corolla Cross especially in top range model grades.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Corolla engines and technology: By reputation, PR and long history Toyota has the most durable and the best hybrid engines in the world. Along with the storied Corolla brand you can expect the same attributes in both models. That said Toyota engines are not known for high speed or power and these are perfect examples of the Toyota brand. Both make decent power and very fuel efficient but not particular fast. Safety systems and tech gadgets are based on the relevant model grade and they come with most of the features you’d expect including the underrated radar cruise control.

The conclusion and winner of the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Corolla comparison is probably the normal Corolla. The Corolla wins as it offers a more premium interior, economy, driving involvement and looks for a lower price. On the other hand the Corolla Cross offers a high riding and a more spacious interior let down by looking and feeling lower grade, certainly looking on the dated side of things. We won’t even consider the AWD system as being useful except in places where it snows often. In fact the Corolla Cross pricing makes the RAV4 more appealing for some reason.
