This is the new Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Yaris Cross comparison for 2023. The competitors to the Corolla Cross come from not only other brands but Toyota’s own model range as well – thanks to overlapping prices. Since we currently have mixed views on both models it should be an interesting comparison.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Yaris Cross exterior design: Although the Corolla Cross was released last year it doesn’t look like a new design. You could argue that it is based on the regular Corolla of 2022 but we don’t think the link is that definitive. In comparison the Yaris Cross looks nothing like the regular Yaris. Regardless side by the side both designs have a Toyota-ness to them. Both do not differentiate model grades very much so it’s spot the difference via large and flashier alloy wheels.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Yaris Cross interior: The Corolla Cross has the same interior as the normal Corolla which means it’s nice but there is very little change as you move up the model grade ladder. We felt short changed in terms of presentation more than anything else. It is a nice interior but that’s the best description as it is a little dated in terms of design. In comparison the Yaris Cross interior has the same vibe as the Corolla Cross and overall it is OK. It just looks and feels cheap in base model trim but does improve a little as you move up the spec ladder. The brown leather interior to the model topper resembles that used on the Hilux but it doesn’t feel ‘expensive’ but it is nice to have a different colour for a change. We think that a wool based interior would be much nicer.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Yaris Cross engines and technology: Once again it is the hybrid engine option on both models that are the ones to get as the power plant gives decent performance. Neither are particularly fast but the fuel economy is the thing that stands out. The safety packages in both models are similar with the Yaris Cross needing the higher grade models to get Cross traffic and Blind Spot alerts, handy but not essential for obvious reasons.
The conclusion and winner of the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Toyota Yaris Cross comparison is probably the Yaris Cross. The only reason we’d pick the Yaris Cross is due to pricing. However it would a specific model which is the mid range Yaris Cross GXL 2WD with the Hybrid engine which is priced about the same as the entry level Corolla Cross without the Hybrid. The Yaris Cross has a claimed fuel consumption of under 4 litres per 100km which is close to the real world usage figure, which in turn at least half what the non-hybrid Corolla Cross. That said the entry level Corolla Cross Hybrid costs just as much as the top range Yaris Cross Hybrid and you could argue worth buying if you want extra space.
