This is the new Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 comparison for 2019. The Toyota RAV4 has just been updated and it’s a completely new model. We like the old one and one of us actually owns one hence ether lack of comparison due to bias, however that’s changed as there is now an all new model. The CX-5 is also in our the fleet and it is a seriously good smaller mid sized SUV currently available. But which one is the better one to buy?
Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 exterior design : We like the CX-5 design, it’s modern sporty and mostly unique but it does remind us of older Alfa Romeo in the front head light treatment. Overall a conservative modern design that appeals to most. In comparison the new Toyota RAV4 is clearly based on the Toyota 4Runner for North America or perhaps the Tacoma truck or ute. This is strange since you would expect the RAV4 to be more influenced by the current but larger Kluger SUV. Overall nice look at but not exactly a desirable or unique design but more appliance like.
Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 interior: The CX-5 has a great interior design. Sure the base model is little spartan but the top range look more upmarket than it’s price indicates. The tradition analogue dash is strange in the world of partial or fully digital instrument panels. The RAV4 interior is nice pace to be so well but clearly not upscale in terms materials or presentation. I’t’s basically a family orientated design seemingly built for durability than looks. Top range RAV4 models are nice but does not match the equilivent CX-5 in premium look or feel.
Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 engines and technology: The new RAV4 is a technology powerhouse in terms of engine and safety tech – unseen by every driver – it’s a Toyota thing. The virtually full Hybrid power train even with AWD is not the first but a proven package and clearly in high demand based on Camry and Corolla sees with a similar setup. The Mazda CX-5 is also state of art with conventional petrol engine or the new turbo that produces impressive power and use less fuel at the same time. Admittedly not as efficient at the RAV4. The CX-5 has the better stereo system that is BOSE branded – but it’s not close to aftermarket system but nice addition regardless.
Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 drive experience : The new CX-5 is quieter than the prior version and rides nicer too, firm but good compliance when there are bumps. There is a solid and smooth feel from the steering wheel with some feedback and reasonably accurate feedback but missing the truly adjustable provokable oversteer on front or rear wheel drive SUVs. It’s nice and safe feeling. Haven’t driven the new RAV4 yet. Note that it is clear than ancillary safety system like lane departure, assist and all those are rather annoying due to the poor road conditions in much of Australia even in the cities.
The conclusion to the new Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5 comparison is simple: The new RAV4 is the better buy on the spec sheet but for the engine, space and safety features. However you wouldn’t buy it for the look or feel of driving one. It’s still Toyota in terms of positioning but with he unique feature of a proven genuinely fuel efficient Hybrid engine. The CX-5 can be regarded as something little more special due to the nicer interior and materials.
