This is the Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 comparison for 2018. We haven’t reviewed a Volvo for quite a while even with the release of the XC60 last year. However and finally they’ve released the smaller XC40 which is in the price range that appeals to more people and the perception of the Volvo’s brand value. That Volvo brand or steet cred is about safety and pricing and regarded as better than the Japanese or American brands. It is also usually about cars the look like boxes and wagons. So we decided to compare the XC40 with one of the best smallish SUVs the Mazda CX-5 to see how far it has come.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 exterior comparison: There is no doubting that the XC40 looks good. It uses all of Volvo’s latest styling ideas and makes it noticeably different from any other SUVs in the same class. Along with the seeming higher quality paint it looks more expensive than it’s price suggests. Volvo’s the past where related to Ford and Mazda SUVs but not longer, this one is a Chinese Geely platform despite some similarities. The XC40 in comparison to the CX-5 simply looks fussy and old compare to the minimalist and distinctly European XC40 then expected from Volvo’s owners, Geely in China. We prefer the XC40 design more than the CX-5 which looks a little old in comparison.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 interior comparison: The interior of the XC40 is impressive for the class and price range. You get tablet screen for a dashboard and a huge 9 inch centre console screen as standard across the range. The materials include a small cloth like console feature and a mix of higher quality hard and soft plastics to make the XC40 one of the nicest and ‘expensive’ looking in the class. The Mazda CX-5 has old school design and luxury appearance in the top range models. The CC=5’s lower end models are just that lower and feel that way. The Volvo XC40 is equipped with Harmon Kardon sound which sound great along with the digital displays give the XC40 an ambience that the CX-5 cannot match.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 engine and technology comparison: There are really only 2 engine choices in the Volvo one diesel and petrol all are powerful given the kerb weight but it unfortunately Volvo has all done the turbo tuning trick and is a rip off and marketing choice hence only 2 engines. Noted that there are probably more changes than just turbo tuning but to everyday folks it is. That said at least power level in the base variant is pretty decent. There is tons of safety systems dependent model grade but nothing particularly special as in past Volvo’s. Of note the Volvo is equipped with Harmon Kardon sound which sound great along with the two huge digital displays but 2018 standards give the XC40 an better ambience that the CX-5 cannot match. The Mazda has plenty of safety systems along with a reasonable set of engines but none truly challenge the Volvo XC40’s engine options.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 drive report : N/A
The conclusion and winner of the Volvo XC40 Vs Mazda CX-5 comparison is neither. The Volvo XC40 would easily win the comparison but the turbo tuning trick is simply not acceptable. The XC40 arguably sets the standard for a smallish SUVs for design for the next 5 years or so! The CX-5 is still a very good SUV it looks and feels good in particular the top range however it’s not as good as the XC40 and if you take price into consideration the introductory base or mid-range Volvo XC40 with the high power engine is a more appealing purchase.
