This is the Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail comparison for 2018. We haven’t looked at the X-Trail a while because it’s that sort of SUV, meaning is contemporary, current and what you’d expect. The Volvo XC40 is the conceptual the opposite of what the X-Trail and so far we definitely like this particular and launch model. We decided to compare the two as the top range X-Trail vs the base Volvo XC40 in price.
Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail exterior comparison: The exterior of the X-Trail is a perfect example of moderns design it’s good to look at with the plain side profile, ‘aggressive’ chromed front, a slightly odd rear end and topped off with nice looking alloy wheels. The XC40 is simply a good looking SUV with a progressive design with the latest styling themes that make it look upmarket and retro inspired colour themes. The same colour schemes would look odd on and X-Trail.
Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail interior comparison: The X-Trail has a nicely designed interior that looks and feels good considering it’s price and spec. Base X-Trail’s interior is a little basic but the price reflects it’s spec list. In contrast the XC40 is just under $20,000 more expensive but it’s interior is suitably a nicer place to be in but it’s not worth that much more perhaps $8000 more would be a fairer difference. This applies to any SUV with such a price difference not just these two. That said the top range X-Trail is a decent place to be and the only difference is the leather vs Cloth seats in the base model XC40 but we prefer the nicer looking and comfortable cloth and definitely the sporty leather covered ones on the higher range XC40 models.
Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail engine and technology comparison: This is the category that the X-Trail really falls apart. Old engines and a problematic CVT gearbox in the X-Trail do not inspire long term confidence. In comparison the XC40 has all the features and more which you’s expect due to the price difference for anything but the top range X-Trail. Unfortunately bolo is not immune to the turbo tuning trick.
Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail street cred : While Nissan as a manufacturer has a couple models that have tremendous street cred specifically the Nissan Skyline and the 370Z the rest of the range is pretty ordinary. The Volvo has better branding than a Nissan especially the highly demanded but ancient 240 series.
The conclusion and winner of the Volvo XC40 Vs Nissan X-Trail comparison is the XC40 if it didn’t have the turbo tuning trick. Yes the Volvo XC40 is the better SUV spec and badge wise no question but it comes with a huge price difference when comparing top range models. However if you only compare the top range X-Trail with the base XC40 and the results would be the same, the XC40 will be the pick. In terms of feel despite having fabric seats in the base XC40 they where honestly more comfortable still look pretty good against the decent looking but hard leather in the X-Trail.
