Welcome to the old Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) comparison for 2023. Predictably as still hot from the factory in Thailand the new Ford Ranger is here and mostly out of stock! Things have change since the last set of ute and light Truck comparisons since 2019. For example the Mercedes X Class is no more, the D-Max is now also a Mazda but mostly the VW Amarok is now also Ford Ranger. There are also plenty of new models in the form of Chinese brands. Now, most would consider it pointless to compare the old Ford Ranger to the new Ranger but we don’t think so for reasons below.
Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) exterior comparison: The old Ranger was a nice looking ute or small truck. The best part about it was the front end which was recognisably Ford and truck like. Unlike the Triton revamp for example the rest of the Ranger body is still very Japanese, specifically Mazda but nonetheless looked big and bulky. Regardless and overall the old Ranger looked well proportioned. In comparison the new Ford Ranger is yet another mod of the old model and we think in a bit of a crisis in terms of design. Gone are the last generation Japanese inspired styling except for the same door skins and in with the latest rear profile as per the SEA or Japanese designs and to a more Toyota Tacoma design rather than an evolution of the last model. Sure the Ranger front end is more looking more like the F series truck and not forgetting the Ford Maverick in North America but the rest is not. We don’t even think the VW Amarok twin will even resemble the origin Amarok in terms of looks. In the end the new Ford Ranger is still look decent but there’s too much Tacoma in the design language on the outside.
Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) interior comparison: The old Ranger interior was a nice place to be in, due mainly to car like levels of materials and size. However it was on the Spartan side to look at. In comparison the new Ford Ranger uses styling that more people understand. It’s a bit like the original Teslas and indeed the latest Volvos and the latest F-Series trucks as well. So the new Ranger’s interior is best described conservative with big digital screens to distract you. Low grade Rangers are very cheap to be in and clearly equipped with commercial grade parts including vinyl flooring as it is only the high end Ford Rangers that are well appointed which you’s expect for the price. Not quite luxury not quite premium but what you’d expect for the price which is even higher.
Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) engine and technology comparison: Since the new model is shared with VW Amarok the only seeming carry over is the 2 litre turbo diesel the rest of the engine options drive train appear to be from Land Rover or VW which is good and bad. Needles to say parts will probably be expensive and you will need to replace them more often. The biggest change is the AWD system rather than part time 4WD system and even without it optioned weight has gone up in heft by around 200kg.
Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) cred comparison: The Ranger has street cred and a loyal fan base so there is something in Ford=truck maker cred. However we think that only applies to the Ranger Raptor model which a genuine performance truck. It has enough cred and differences at least for now for us to compare it as a separate model.
The winner of the Ford Ranger (2023) vs new Ford Ranger (2024) comparison is the new Ranger. While only the Raptor model truly wins by being different to the normal Ranger. However the rest of the model grades have enough gadgets to win over new buyers. The only issue we have is that it is not any more efficient than the older model which new cars are supposed to be. It’s slower and uses more fuel in real life and makes a mockery of the claimed fuel efficiency and real life. Base models are model expensive than mid range utes from other manufacturers as you will see there is probably not enough features to justify the noticeably higher price. That said prices for any new car has gone up tremendously and it is fortunate that Ford hasn’t raised prices completely beyond what the market will tolerate and shortages for all manufacturers except for Chinese brands (for some reason) but we will analyse that later.
