Welcome to the Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 truck comparison comparison for 2020. It’s been decades since these two North American trucks have been available for sale in Australia. Finally thanks to revisions of the legal stuff you can buy new or lightly used version of these trucks. We’ve managed to check these two benchmark brands and models and ready to share our opinions. Note that there are lots of model variants in common with buying a genuine commercial vehicle. Furthermore RAM trucks are ‘officially’ imported models whereas the Ford F150 is not. The Ford F150 can be purchase through import and conversion specialists all over the country, it just depends on which dealer you trust most. Note that I use ‘Dodge RAM’ in the title as the rest of the world doesn’t know about the RAM branding.
If you didn’t know by now, both are North American brands, specially from the USA. They have been available around the world as small volume or limited number imports. The demand of these are largely based on reputation or marketing as few markets actually need these types of trucks and they are not exactly what they seem and are expensive. RAM is not a well known brand and needs to be associated with it’s form brand Dodge, wether good or bad.
Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 exterior comparison: You can’t do very much to the basic design that don’t compromise it’s utility unless you don’t intend to use it for carrying stuff. The only different design we’ve seen to date is the Tesla Cybertruck which appears to match the usefulness of these exisiting models. We prefer the Ford F-150 design because it looks good in a classic, conservative yet modern. It’s also got the nicest looking front end. The RAM 1500 is not a bad looker either with retro elements but doesn’t quite do it for us.
Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 interior comparison: Both design are not new dating back 10 years with the F-150 receiving and update in 2015 and the RAM to be determined. Once again there are so main trim levels that it’s really hard to generalise. Rather we can say that the base grade of the F-150 and 1500 are very basic at the lower model grades and the top end models very upmarket. However the quality of materials are not exactly luxury car by international standards but flashy by truck or commercial vehicle standards. We feel that the ‘upmarket’ parts look and feel like they’ve been added rather then integrated. Check them out and you’ll understand.
Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 engines and technology comparison: There a lots of engine choices for both trucks so we’ve listed the ‘most popular’ options. They are all powerful engines since they weigh over 2700kg on average. Surprisingly they can’t actually carry much in the standard tray at less the 800kg so you will need to configure the tray with other options if wanting a dedicated truck. As standard both are a little underwhelming compared to the current Hilux or Ranger in terms of carrying capacity. The F-150 has the most high tech body in the class with aluminium tray and body which means it weighs at least 300-500kg less than the RAM dependent on configuration. Safety systems in both are not a priority are you need to pay for the optional safety pack. Instead come with with infotainment systems and interior trim levels like vibrating seats and so forth. In the end, there are so many variants of both models that it is tough to generalise.
However in technical terms and for most models in the consumer spec range they have relative towing and load capability (in standard trim) not that much more than our currently popular models and even lower tray loading capacity than virtually all smaller utes like the Ranger, Hilux and Navara. That said we are sure towing a 3 tonne trailer in either RAM 1500 of Ford F150 will be less stressful than in a smaller ute.
Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 street Cred – Both have street cred due to branding and rarity. The Ford F-150 definitely has more cred than the RAM 1500 as RAM is often heavily promoted budget truck in base model grade. That said the RAM has a better rep in North America than else where.
The winner Dodge RAM 1500 Vs Ford F150 comparison is a draw. It is a draw as it was a tough comparison! There are so many options and variants for both models we feel that is the looks and branding that are the key factors that sell either model. Once you’ve picked which one there are engine and trim packages that basically equalise the two models aka in specification, capability and even price.
