Welcome to the comparison between the all new Mazda CX-9 Vs Nissan Pathfinder comparison. With the release of the all new ‘2017’ Mazda CX-9 in July 2016 we checked it out and came away impressed. The Pathfinder is a few years old now but its still a decent SUV, relatively since we’ve only been a passenger in it once to the airport. It was a memorable drive since it was compared to the Prado at the time. So we decided to revisit the Pathfinder and compare it with the new CX-9.
Mazda CX-9 Vs Nissan Pathfinder exterior comparison: The new Mazda CX-9 looks great no question probably the best in the class at the time of writing in 2016. The design also hides the CX-9’s substantial size which will attract a few new buyers. The Pathfinder still looks good but clearly bulky like a traditional 4WD wagon. Like new Nissans there are purposely contrasting curves but toned down for the masses overall nice but a little conservative.
Mazda CX-9 Vs Nissan Pathfinder interior comparison: The Pathfinder’s interior was impressive when released, with modern styling and loads of buttons. The presentation and feel was lounge like with design touches that made you feel comfortable, single function button where also much easier to use than mostly fiddly touch screen buttons even in 2016. It still looks great but complicated although only at first glance but older thanks to the minimalist yet complex CX-9 interior design language. We can best describe the CX-9 interior as office like, European inspired yet some touches of traditional Japanese themes. Overall the CX-9 does look and feel good and premium too and contrasts with the lounge like ambience of the Pathfinder.
Mazda CX-9 Vs Nissan Pathfinder engines and technology comparison: Both are petrol engines only since they sell these the most in the US rather than Europe or Asia so it logical. With petrol engines that are smooth, quiet and definitely low maintenance but slightly higher fuel use you make it all back over the long term and save the environment more too. The Pathfinder now has 2 engine choices being the excellent 3.5 litre V6 and a new 2.5 litre supercharged 2.4 litre with a small electric motor with a same power as the V6, so wins the engine comparison. However it does come with a CVT which sort of makes it a win lose scenario. The traditional 2.5 litre turbo in the CX-9 is good too but disadvantaged by being tuned for lot to mid range power rather than the more exciting top end. In the safety and entertainment aspect both are as good as each other dependent on which model grade you can afford.
Mazda CX-9 Vs Nissan Pathfinder drive comparison: N/A
The Mazda CX-9 so far presents really well in the specification comparison and in the showroom. The interesting thing is the Nissan’s Pathfinder’s pricing which of the mid-range models appear competitive with ‘optional packs’ become overpriced. Nissan has once again missed the opportunity to gain a decent foothold in the category by using sales tactics not relevant to this market. Regardless we think you’d be happy in either SUV but the overall design and regular gearbox makes the CX-9 a winner. Judging by the Mazda’s other cars at the moment the CX-9 should be a decent drive too. Hopefully we get a drive soon.
