This is the Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class comparison for 2018. We like the Volvo XC40 for it’s overall package and that it only has one major problem. We have never reviewed the the latest Mercedes GLA purely because it’s just a high rise A Class hatch so not particularly SUV like. Furthermore we don’t tend to cover the luxury or prestige models as only the branding makes them more expensive rather than better. So finally and about time too, we compare the GLA Class with it’s newest competitor.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class exterior comparison: There is no question that the XC40 stands out in the class when optioned with the ‘Amazon Blue and White’ Colour scheme. The Mercedes GLA only comes in the usual Mercedes colours which means it doesn’t stand out in the class. The quality of the paint it visibly higher than the cheaper brands but the Volvo is arguably as good. The GLA class is just the A class with slight longer suspension. bigger wheel arches but mainly bigger wheels for a higher ride height. The GLA has huge rear lights and a more aggressive front end to differentiate it from regular A Class. However on the balance you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the A and the GLA class. Beside the Volvo looks great without the current arresting front and rear end styling trend.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class interior comparison: The XC40 interior shows the way for all future Volvo cars and SUVs. It looks good with 2 large digital displays and almost retro style air vents, overall the closet thing you can get to a Tesla style layout but with higher quality materials than the Tesla. Even the entry level cloth and vinyl trim looks and feels good to be in. The GLA interior is best described as a decent place to be in dependent on model grade. Base level GLAs are not exactly luxurious but the build quality is there to see. The higher quality steering wheel helps the ambience with is modern dash board but overall a dark and on the small side. Move up the model grade and it’s much better but the price you pay is very high. Nonetheless a entry GLA is a cheap experience than the comparable GLA model grade.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class engine and technology comparison: Both are option pack based and use turbo tuning tricks so we’ve done a summary. The Volvo XC40 has the fairest engine options one petrol turbo tuned two ways and one diesel which produce enough power by 2018 to be fast transport. The XC40 has all the safety features and branded stereo system but dependent on model grade. The dual screens gives it both a more upmarket and nicer place to be. The Mercedes GLA class currently consists of GLA180 GLA220 GLA250 and GLA A45 mated with a Dual Clutch 7 speed automatic and the option of diesel of petrol. The A45 is the branded an AMG so has the most powerful best handling version you can buy and is a tech wonder. There are plenty of option packs for the GLA so if you like the hatchback shape your GLA is the choice however note that the base model is a stripper with few system but the stereo system still sound decent though. In there end the XC40 comes with much more equipment than the GLA regardless of model grade.
Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class drive report : N/A
The conclusion and winner of the Volvo XC40 Vs Mercedes GLA Class comparison is the XC40. Since both use turbo tuning rip off trick especially Mercedes in the GLA where the regular 2.0 turbo has 140Kw or half the power of the other version and even less in the C -Class version. There are plenty optional packs to improve the look and feel of the GLA class but why $4500 more for an interior you’d expect on a Mercedes? The Volvo is less of the rip off hence wins. Apart from the engine the Volvo looks and feels more expensive on the inside even in base trim cloth and vinyl and outside. Move up the range the the interior only adds to the ambience. Hopefully Volvo will not price the XC40 out the class because it’s bordering on the expensive side of things especially since the Volvo badge doesn’t quite have the cache of a Mercedes badge.
